My heart just sank. Wishing Eugene a speedy recovery and saddened by these awful expressions of hate.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

When these things are happening in my neighborhood, in one of the gayest neighborhoods in the country, I WANT TO PUNCH THE F*CKING WALL.

I feel the same way, Jordan. I live in HK too. I'm posting an article from Buzzfeed I read the other day that is proving sadly true: there is no safe city for queer people.
There is no such thing as a safe city for queer people

Sending good thoughts Eugene's way. I don't know him apart from the board here, but he always struck me as a stand up guy. I'm glad that he's, from the sounds of it, physically okay and also glad that he called police after the attack.
From NY1...
A Manhattan teenager is facing hate crime charges after he allegedly struck a local gay activist by a Hell's Kitchen nightclub early Saturday morning.
Manuel Riquelme, 19, is charged with hate crime and aggravated harassment after allegedly hitting Eugene Lovendusky, 28, a Queens resident and co-founder of Queer Rising, an LGBT rights and advocacy group.
Police say the alleged assault took place at 3 a.m. Saturday on West 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.
At the time, authorities say Lovendusky and his boyfriend and another friend were leaving the XL nightclub and walking towards a nearby subway stop.
Police say a group of nine teenagers, including Riquelme, passed the three men and started calling them anti-gay slurs.
Riquelme allegedly slapped Lovendusky in the face and knocked off the victim's glasses, according to police.
After the alleged incident, Lovendusky called police and officers found the teens in a pizzeria at West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue.
Lovendusky did not seek medical attention.
The incident is being investigated as a bias assault, according to police.
None of the other teenagers who accompanied Riquelme are facing charges, according to police.

While I've been fairly vocal in the past about not being the biggest EugLoven fan this is absolutely horrible and I hate that anyone has to go through this type of thing.
Best wishes, Eugene.

This makes me sick! WTF?
Common sense? What's common about it? No one has common sense. It should be called rare sense.

I hope that kid gets the chair. And only for the fact that slapping someone you think is gay across the face is the gayest hate crime I can think of. And this was on my street. Eugene should have yelled out for me and I would have come down and helped beat that kids ass.

It's horrible either way but I admit I'm a bit confused as to the details, Towleroad vs NY1 reports. Hoping the NY1 story is the more accurate one since it said Eugene didn't seek medical help. When I read the Towleroad story I was fulling expecting him to be hospitalized. Again, it's still horrible and totally sucks, and this crap has got to stop. New York! Of all the places!

It was done in a group, of course. How manly.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

It's time for gay folks to start patrols in their neighborhoods and they need to start beating back, twice as hard.

This is absurd. My thoughts are with Eugene, who I don't know personally, but just the idea that this is happening in what are supposedly among the most "gay friendly" neighborhoods in the world makes me sick.

Sending Eugene lots of love. This is terrifying and unacceptable. What the hell is going on?

I hate that this is happening. I need to ask a question and it's an honest one.
Is this happening more often or does it just appear that way because it's being reported more?

From the sound of it (a smack that knocked his glasses off) I'm sure any recuperating is more emotional than physical - which in many ways is worse.
Oh, my city - what the hell is happening to you????
Eug -- my thoughts are with you.
