I still don't know what swinging on a trapeze has to do with anything.
These shows are getting farther and farther away from talent and almost completely at sensationalism now. pity.

It doesn't take talent to sing and swing from a trapeze?
Why not just sing? What's the purpose of swinging on a trapeze at the same time. Personally, it looks to me like desperation, that's all.

I liked what Pink did, but I can't entirely disagree with you. But I'll take Pink's trapeze act over Lady Gaga's really desperate performance, with the silly outfit and fake blood, I mean really.
I agree, it's a close call for winner of the attention whore award.
Jane, I think it is from Pink's current tour. She has a circus themed performance in support of her Funhouse album.
Ah, I see. thanks for that info, YWIW.
I was just going to post about the kind of thing Lady googoo did last night. She/he isn't the only one. We see this at every major event. I see it this way- it's usually the most ridiculous costume someone could conjure up. It never has style nor reason. It's a reflection of a lack of respect for one's possible and current fans, but more it's desperation to be talked about. And not the way I'm talking about it.
It reminds me of an artist friend of mine who is A list in the art world. He once encouraged me to exhibit a roll of film I had shot which didn't have one good frame on it. "It's a bunch of $hit" I told him. "Yeah, that's the point" he said. "Put up a bunch of $hit, that's what I do. It's funny, you're making fun of the people who see it."
I think her "true art" is probably drinking:

I hope Taylor writes a song about Kanye.
Besides the meltdown with Kanye, I think this was overall one of the better VMAs MTV has produced in a long time. On the whole, performances were pretty great and they didn't spend as much time on cheesy dialogue between awards.
Muse and Green Day were awesome. Taylor Swift's performance doesn't really stand out to me but she got her moment in the end and looked beautiful. Although I do wish she sang more, Beyonce showed once again why she's a star. She can really pull off dance heavy routines, sound great and look fabulous doing it. Janet rocked the opening. It must have been difficult, but dancing with Michael through the Scream video was a wonnderful idea. I'd watch "This is It" too.
I can see what has been said recently about Pink and Lady Gaga's performances being over-the-top, but I think they suited the songs well and were well done. Besides being part of her tour theme, the trapeze complements a lot of the lyrics in Pink's song about falling, holding on, letting go, etc. The stage pictures they made with their bodies were pretty and connected to the relationship the song describes.
As for Lady Gaga, if you understand the concept behind her video for paparazzi then you'll understand her performance, including the blood and the Phantom of the Opera theme. Her lyrics are simple pop, but many actually are a commentary/satire on popular culture. One doesn't have to like her (or her fashion, for that matter) but I give her props for following her own style and trying to present a complete work.
Also, kinda random, but did anyone notice one of her backup dancers was MARK KANEMURA from last season's SYTYCD? Love him!
MTV doesn't show videos anymore so what is all this f**kery?
Love the Amy ref. BorstalBoy!
(...that was an Amy ref., right?)

Kelly Clarkson had this to say to Kanye: "You're a sad human being," among other things, Clarkson says, "I've seen you do some pretty s----- things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, ass--- ways. .... It's absolutely fascinating how much I don't like you. I like everyone."
"What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?" Clarkson writes. "Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we're all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like s---."
"you weren't even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a Moon Man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up."
"I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her," she writes. "So why can't you be?? I'm not even mad at you for being an ass----. ... I just pity you because you're a sad human being."

I just can't wait for Saturday Night Life to spoof this. Anyone else?
But really though. This'll be old news in about a week or so.
Plus I don't remember there being this much outrage from "celebs" from their twitter accounts when news came out about Chris Brown beating up Rihanna. Where was the outrage from Pink, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson when this happened? They're all acting as if Kanye went up on stage and punched Taylor in the face.

I think Lady Gaga is pretty great and I love the dedication to turning every moment in front of a camera into performance art. It's what Madonna might have done if she were actually a creative artist and not just a determined businesswoman.
Also, the lyrics in the Pink song were all about hanging on and flying and swinging, so it made sense to me. PLUS she sang while doing it. Janet Jackson can't move her arms across her neck in a throat-cutting fashion without lip-synching.
What does Madonna have to do with it?
Here we go with the Madonna hate again!
I feel Janet may get a career boost from Michael dying/that performance.
She's relevant again, granted for unfortunate reasons, but still.
The shot of her dancing with Michael in the vid was well done. Loved Beyonce getting really into it haha.
Janet lip synched, but she was giving her all with the dancing and it really showed.

Hey Jane, I didn't mention Madonna in Sharon Tate drag turning her schpiel about Michael Jackson into a schpiel about (surprise!) Madonna, did I?
I just think Lady Gaga IS a creative artist and her ever changing get ups didn't strike me as insulting, they struck me as clever. Leigh Bowery-clever.

I LOVED Pink and thought Lady Gaga was pretty great. So theatrical and I couldn't take my eyes off of her.
Namo, I hated how Madonna made it all about her!
" Leigh Bowery-clever. "
But Leigh Bowery did it already- more than 15 years ago. Lady googoogaga is a Bowery wannabe.
I just don't get why EVERY gay man is obsessed with Gaga. Am I missing something?
I agree that it was the best VMAs in a while.
Loved Beyonce, Muse (from stage right and on TV), and Pink's performances. I'm one of those gays who loves Lady Gaga, but she wasn't my fave last night. She was certainly interesting and her costume changes were fun. She knows what she's doing. She's being talked about massively today along with the unfortunate Kanye scandal.
And, I loved the MJ tribute. Janet dancing with her brother's film image really got to me. And, I thought Madonna's speech brought out the humanity in Michael and gave some perspective about his life from someone in similar (though very different) shoes. I thought she was painfully honest even if it did seem self-motivated at times.
