I see women do this all the time, also as well as taking up the seat next to them with their purse and not moving it.

Furthermore, it's not at all unique to the subways as well. There were a couple of times that I took the Long Island Rail Road home and it was rush hour. There were people who either had bags on seats that refused to use the overhead storage racks, or even if it was a two person seat, the person already sitting there would balk at the idea of you sitting down next to them. Frankly, I get it. We aren't talking about a train that's leaving the city at ten at night here. Everyone on the damn thing has had a long day and are tired and just want to get home. But, at the same time, would it kill anyone to show a little common kindness?

I'm surprised that a woman would have a purse with her on public transportation and not hold it close. I like to think that it's not that I don't trust people, more that I don't want to have to worry about whether or not I can trust people.

Purses, backpacks, whatever. And it's men AND women who equally do this stuff but I don't see any signs up or internet campaigns to stop women. That's why this thing just pisses me off.

#6

I don't blame you.

I could see the term itself referring to everybody in general, like "mankind" does, but yeah, any campaign should be clear that it is meant to address all passengers.

I think the bag thing is universal, but the leg-spread is primarily men. Some women do it, I suppose. My ass is wide enough that I would never ever dare to take up any more room than absolutely necessary.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I find that with both legs spread out (and I think it's vulgar, too), the men take up 3 seats which is more than a woman and a bag.

My solution?-I sit down anyway. The men close their legs and the women grab their bags.

Also, if you say "excuse me", the person will make room for you. I mean, there's an entire campaign for a "problem" that doesn't need solving. A person who doesn't move when you say "excuse me" isn't going to be shamed by your stupid "man spreading" campaign.

true but what bothers me the most is the gall that these people have in the first place. Men and women. They know exactly what they 're doing.

I'm more annoyed by the people who insist on taking bikes or double-wide strollers onto the trains at rush hour.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going in a totally different direction...

This always bugs me too, I'm with JC. There are at least three blogs about men who sit on the bus/train with their legs too wide. Most of the posts are photos of *empty* trains. They are not of some guy's legs making it so some little old woman can not sit down. Some of the guys are rude to sit that way, but, that's not the issue. http://mentakingup2muchspaceonthetrain.tumblr.com/

#15

Manspreading

That's what I see, also. I hardly ever see those photos where there are people who can't sit down because there's no space. It's stupid attempt at "man shaming" that's (in my opinion) gone way too far.

#16

Manspreading

Agreed. Trust me I don't sit like some of the guys in those photos--but if I am in a near empty bus I do take my room--I might put up my bag or whatever. If it gets more crowded I change that. It's common sense. It's not a "man" problem. As already stated, women have as much to fault in this case.

#17

Manspreading

But good luck trying to "woman shame".

#18

Manspreading

Well, I'm still dissenting. 90% of men I see on the train are spreading. Even on full trains. It seems to me that's the way men sit, period. And the percentage of women who put their bags next to them is far from 90% More like about 15%. And how about those men who spread AND put their bags on the seat. I see plenty of that.

How about women who sit sideways so they don't have to worry about their "business" showing? They're taking up 2 seats. Should they be shamed, also?

I love when a woman has 4 children with her .Some of them are even infants they all take up a seat when many people, including old folks, stand . I love when someone has a shopping bag with them and that takes up a seat. One person gave me a dirty look when I told her I hoped her bag had a comfortable ride.

Both sexes are guilty of a lack of subway etiquette.

Oh, the bike people, the bike people. Lived in Manhattan 24 years and never got used to that. The doors open, and someone is parked right there, with the bike. I once questioned one, and was given a haughty, elitist sociopolitical explanation, that bikers don't pollute, use public transportation and therefore earn more space, so STFU. Nice, a-hole environmentalist.

Don't start me on about the bike people. In addition to the subway, many ignore rules of the road when driving & take out pedestrians with total abandon. The best are those with the motorized bikes.

The guy who months ago killed a woman with his speed bike in central park escaped with no punishment.

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would complain about the guy in that first pic doing his man spread thing. As long as he's sitting across from me I'm totally fine with it.

It's bad enuff on a subway but in a theatre- it really PO's me. Some alte kucker did this to me all thru BofM. I was on the aisle and had to turn sideways craning my neck half the time and the old fart kept turning and giving ME the fish eye.
