I think she deserved it.

Kidman got to steal her own oscar later...from Julianne Moore.

I love Sissy, but I thought Wilkinson was the oscar worthy performance in In the Bedroom.

"Kidman got to steal her own oscar later...from Julianne Moore."

Either Julianne or Renee that year, who won it the following year for "Cold Mountain."

But Julianne has yet to get an Oscar... "stolen" or not!

It's her turn, damn it. She's too good.

Moore's work in Far from Heaven is transcendant. As much as I love Kidman (and her strong work in The Hours), I think that Oscar belonged to Ms. Cathy Whitaker.

Renee that year, who won it the following year for "Cold Mountain."

Don't remind me... lol

I'm with you guys on that one. Julianne Moore should have taken the Oscar for Far From Heaven. An incredible performance. Nicole was pretty lackluster in the Hours. However, I thought she gave a beautiful performance in Cold Mountain, an intriguing and complex performance in Dogville and truly astonished me in Birth. Those are Kidman performances that truly deserved nominations let alone wins.

Julianne Moore always gives a superb performance. She definietly deserved an Oscar for "Far From Heaven" and "The Hours." I like her in everything she does. She's very underrated...I feel the same way about Annette Benning.

I actually do think that Kidman deserved the award for THE HOURS, though Moore definitely gave an Oscar-worthy performance in the heavily underrated FAR FROM HEAVEN. However, the biggest travesty that year was Dennis Quaid's getting snubbed from a nomination when he deserved the actual award that eventually went to Chris Cooper whose performance in ADAPTATION was good but hardly a la par with Quaid's brilliant, haunting portrayal of Frank.

I think Moore should've been double nominated as best actress for The Hours (not a supporting role...that nom should've gone to Toni Collette) and Far From Heaven...winning for either.

I dont think Kidman was anywhere near as good as Moore in The Hours, just my opinion, but it was about the nose and cigs.

Kidman did, however, give a strong enough for a nom performance in The Others, imo...it's the only time I was truly impressed by her.

I dont believe in being "overdue" for an oscar, considering how many great actors never recieved one, but it does feel so deserving for her.

Ed Cooper whose performance in ADAPTATION was good but hardly a la par with Quaid's brilliant, haunting portrayal of Frank.

Chris Cooper? I have to disagree. While LaRoche could have easily been a caricature, Cooper's performance continuously grew from scene to scene, gaining more and more depth. He turned this cantankerous, toothless fellow into someone who was believably intelligent and charming. Quaid was VERY good, but it was Haysbert who truly touched me. I nominate both, but I feel Haysbert and Patricia Clarkson are the unsung heroes of that film.

Oops, thanks for the correction, Bway86, don't know why I wrote Ed instead of Chris.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Cooper's performance. The whole film was perfectly cast really. However, I just thought that Quaid turned in the better performance that year, and he wasn't even nominated. God, his scenes with Moore are the stuff heaven is made of (a sad, heart-breaking, tear-jerking heaven...but still).
I do agree that Clarkson was brilliant in the movie, then again I don't think I've ever seen Clarkson not give a good performance, she's one of those actresses that consistently do great work.
And Doodle, to this day I am still baffled that Toni Collette did not get an Oscar nod for THE HOURS, the range of emotion and personalities she delivers in her one scene is just impressive, that's the movie that made me fall in love with her.

Yeah, I don't know HOW he missed out on at least a nomination. Other than Cooper, he was the critic's "darling" in that category. Also, he did well in the industry awards. Once again, someone at the Academy isn't doing their job...

It belonged to Judi Dench who had to make the journey into Alzheimer's. Second choice would have been Sissy Spacek. Nicole and Renee were good, but Judi and Sissy made the more difficult acting choices that year.

How John C. Reilly managed a nomination for CHICAGO is beyond me. There was nothing Oscar worthy about that performance, especially when compared to Quaid's.

StageManager, I sort of agree. To me, Reilly got the nod for two reasons: 1. He turned in two wonderful performances in buzzed-about films that year, CHICAGO and THE HOURS, 2. The CHICAGO avalanche was too big to ignore, Richard Gere (who is pretty unlucky with the Academy) was the only one who didn't get on that wave, hell, at the rate they went even Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs might have gotten nods.
As I said before, Quaid deserved the award, IMO. It's a similar case of Matt Damon being completely ignored for his Oscar-worthy performance in THE TALENTED MR.RIPLEY.

I SO wanted Bening to win the Oscar for Being Julia!

I don't think she is underrated, though. Underrated isn't the same thing as underacknowledged.

She was fierce in that.

I still don't know how I feel about Best Actress 2004. On one side, we have Swank giving an honest, available, transformative performance. Then, there's Bening tearing the **** out of the London stage. THEN, there's Winslet and Staunton doing the best work of their careers, and breaking many hearts along the way. I tend to lean towards Winslet on this one, but I don't know... Updated On: 2/21/08 at 11:49 AM

Oh, that's right...Bening was nominated in the same year Winslet was for Eternal Sunshine! I am crazy about Kate Winslet, crazy about the movie and loved her in it, but I was completely taken by Bening in her role.

I think Halle deserved that Oscar. It was the first time she stepped out of her comfort zone and reached. She was great in Losing Isiah but that was Lifetime movie caliber content and dialogue. Halle was primal in Monster's Ball. The whole film was a visceral experience and Halle was so raw and stripped of any pretense. "My baby gone! My baby gone!" How can you even stand it-she was a revelation after having a long, successful career already. It is the same reason Charlize got the Oscar-she stepped outside the comfort zone of being a sexy leading lady.

Oscar loves when female actresses get ugly, dont wear makeup or play victims or women with hard lives. It's just what they like.

Sorry, but I think Swank winning for MILLION DOLLAR BABY was just...blah. Winslet should have gone for her eccentric, fascinating portrayal of Clementine; if not her, then Annette Bening, but Swank? Ugh.

Any of the other four should have won over Swank.

That's not to say that Swank wasn't good. But the other four were better.

Speaking of Swank, her performance in Boys Don't Cry was even more than oscar winning brilliance! Since then, though, I've like her but nothing compares to BDC.
