In all the "Oscar" talk I have read or been a part of, the first "Worst Actress" Winner is Halle Berry. I've seen her name come up first MANY times.
So, Who do you think should have won that year? In comparison to other years, I kinda think this was a "weaker" year but that is only relatively speaking. Anyways, my vote was for Sissy Spacek.
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
* Halle Berry -- Monster's Ball {"Leticia Musgrove"}
Judi Dench -- Iris {"Iris Murdoch"}
Nicole Kidman -- Moulin Rouge {"Satine"}
Sissy Spacek -- In the Bedroom {"Ruth Fowler"}
Renée Zellweger -- Bridget Jones's Diary {"Bridget Jones"}
After her performance during her speech, I would have taken it away from her.
I want to thank Lina... and Dorothy... and Shirley from "What's Happening?" Esther Rolle from "Good Times"!
That lady from the Pine-Sol commercials! I love her! Roz Abrams, Tootie from "The Facts of Life"! That topless girl from "Swordfish"! Oh, wait, that's me!
Nell Carter! Keshia Knight-Pullam! Raven-Symone, you go, girl! Strong black women like my mom!
That topless girl from "Swordfish"! Oh, wait, that's me!
That was pretty funny, Mateo.
I don't really get why she won really, except for, well, the same reason that CRASH has an Oscar.
Either way, Nicole Kidman should have been the one taking the award home that night. She was sublime as Satine, she truly got the over-the-top silly comedy in the first part, and deliciously worked her way into Satine's inner romantic nature through the second part of the movie. Her sequence with the Duke and then the final production number when she is on the floor hearing Christian calling her a whore are priceless.
Oh well, Kidman went on to do THE HOURS and Halle Berry went on to do...ummm...CAT WOMAN?
ray--I think Roger Ebert helped both CRASH and Halle win that Oscar--he was getting quite influential just as his health started to fail...
I would have much rather seen Renee win. I don't think Halle was that good at all.
I can't take credit for any of that.
It was a Saturday Night Live weekend update, with Mya Rudolph as Halle Barry.
It was hilarious.
What made it even better was Amy Poeheler as Julia Roberts - making the moment all about her.
Ummm, she did say Renée.
I actually liked Halle in "Monster's Ball," but I was pulling for Nicole.
Roger Ebert is a good point because I remember seeing on the DVD cover that he called it the "Best Film of the Year".
He also helped a film with a similar name a couple of years later; Monster. Only I think that Theron was MUCH MORE Deserving!
Yes
As I recall, Halle had one scene in Monster's Ball that was Oscar-worthy. The rest was good, but not necessarily outstanding.
I would have preferred it if Nicole had won, but it was such an unusual performance (not even talking about the singing). Her acting style shifted from cartoonish, to heartbreaking, from extreme to subtle. It was very brave and original work, in a very brave and original film.
Still, Halle was quite good. And it was time. And I get that. I don't think she was "unworthy" of the win, but personally I did think there was a better performance that year.
Kidman gave a one-of-a-kind tour de force as Satine, and she would be my choice for the win. To top it all off, she gave another shattering performance in The Others.
That said, Berry did superb work from beginning to end. She would probably be my #6.
My line-up:
Stockard Channing, The Business of Strangers
Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge (and/or The Others)*
Tilda Swinton, The Deep End
Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive
Renee Zellweger, Bridget Jones's Diary
Nicole was the odds on favorite to win. She got it the next year for "The Hours."
I like Nicole. I think she's pretty, and talented. But honestly, when I watch her acting, her technique doesn't really, I dunno, please me? I don't like the whispering thing she usually does. But that's her style, and there are exquisite scenes in all of her films.
No, I was rooting for Sissy Spacek for In the Bedroom, which was one of the best films of 2001! Or I would have been happy with Judi Dench in Iris. Ah well.
HELL NO.
Sissy Spacek should have won.
What's with all the of the Halle hate? I loved the 2001 Oscars. One of my favorite telecasts.
Personally, I would have been happy with Sissy Spacek or Halle. However, seeing Robert Redford and Sidney Poitier win well deserved honorary Oscars and then seeing Halle take the first lead actress award for a black actress and Denzel Washington take the first lead actor award for a black actor since Sidney Poitier was truly thrilling. That image of Denzel on stage saluting Sidney Poitier with his Oscar and Sidney Poitier standing up from his seat in the balcony and standing up and saluting back with his Oscar was quite moving.
Could you legitimately claim that Russel Crowe, Sean Penn, Tom Wilkinson, Judi Dench, Sissy Spacek gave performances as good as those of the eventual winners? Yes, of course. The idea of claiming that one person gave the better performance can seem a bit silly. I really do think that both Halle and Denzel gave excellent performances.
I have no doubt that some Academy votes for Halle and Denzel were a calculated political move. But if the nominees are deserving, as I believe both of them were, why not make such a great statement? I applaud the Academy for their choices that year.
It belonged to Sissy.
Halle won because she is black. Well, not too black. . . It is the same situation with Obama.
I think that Halle Berry did a better job in "Jungle Fever" and "Losing Isaiah." Granted, neither was an Oscar worthy performance, but neither was "Monster's Ball." The winner should have been Sissy Spacek....
I also don't think that Denzel Washington's performance in Training Day was Oscar worthy. I saw the film and found it dull and lackluster with Ethan Hawke as the only person worthy of an Oscar. Tom Wilkinson had my vote that year.
Tom Wilkinson had my vote that year.
I agree. I think it should've been:
Actor - Wilkinson
Actress - Kidman
Supp. Actor - Kingsley
Supp. Actress - Mirren
