Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Sally wins, isn't she "three for three?"

I don't think that's ever happened before (in an acting category).

She has been nominated twice before and won it both times.

EDIT: I just looked up Walter Brennan. He was "three for three" until he received a fourth nomination for Sergeant York and lost.

By the way, Walter won his three Oscars in five years! (1936, 1938, and 1940) That hasn't been done so quickly since.

Hepburn got her third 35 years after her first. Bergman got her third 30 years after her first. Nicholson got his third 22 years after his first.And if Day-Lewis wins, this one will be 23 years after his first.

Brennan, in contrast got his three within a four year period.

I loved Cooper's performance. But I have no problem at all with Day-Lewis winning a third oscar for Lincoln and absolutely none with his being the first male to win three leading oscars.

Why are they retiring? Are they never getting a role again?

I think Jodie Foster will win another Oscar one day. She's one of the great actresses alive and she's got (God willing) a long time left in the business.

Jodie could easily win a third Oscar ... if she doesn't retire, either officially on unofficially.

She has said in interviews that she's been doing this since she was three and she's tired of acting (a bit). I don't think her heart is in it as much. Still, all it takes is one great film role that she's excited about and commits to, etc. She still has plenty of "good years" ahead of her, so anything is possible.

Jennifer Lawrence has a wonderful career ahead of her, and for her to win this year for such a slight performance would be a shame. I actually just watched my screener of Silver Linings Playbook again this evening, and while I adored her the first time around, the performance does not have much weight on second viewing. In fact, the film as a whole is alarmingly less interesting after an initial viewing. I look for it to go home empty handed on Oscar night in all of it's respected categories. At this point, I would say the most realistic victory for SLP would come in Adapted Screenplay.

Oh, and Best Actress is between Chastain and Riva.
