I'm not sure what the deal is with Affleck. Are people still holding Gigli (and a slew of other gems) against him? Aside from his widely varied work from terrific to sucky, I thought he was well-liked.
Bigelow, you know ... she's a woman and all. And this is 1953 if you ask the Director's Branch.

I almost forgot about Robert De Niro and Phillip Seymor Hoffman. They are very talented actors. I also loved the animated shorts 'Maggie Simpson in “The Longest Daycare”' and 'Paperman'.
ETA: It's too bad about 'Moonrise Kingdom' not getting nominated for Best Picture.

"Flight" was the most overrated piece of boring, manipulative junk I've seen in ages. Best Screenplay and Best Actor? You're ****ing kidding me on this one.
I'm not surprised by Washington's nomination (and I quite liked his performance), but the screenplay nomination is a genuine puzzler. It reads like something that would be written in a beginners workshop, with plotholes galore and characters abandoned and underdeveloped left and right. Hell, even the dialogue isn't that great. Hard to believe that it bested screenplays like THE MASTER, which (flaws and all) is leagues better.

BroadwayBenny, how quickly I forget!
Yes, he was. Still a rare leading "musical" nomination for Hugh Jackman, but the last one doesn't go back nearly as far as I thought.

Affleck and Bigelow not being nominated is a huge surprise. And I am a big Argo fan.
But given that the Academy instead nominated Spielberg, Lee, Zeitlin, Haneke and Russell - a very respectable group - it's hard to find fault. Or to blame it on sexism.
It's certainly not the joke that might have been had Affleck or Bigelow been passed over in favor of Hooper.
Interesting that Haneke and Lee are the only two directors nominated for both the oscar and BAFTA by the way.

I'll have to take that back -- I liked SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, much to my surprise. A movie that could have been a dreadful boring manipulative sentimental bit of schlock came alive onscreen in ways that LINCOLN and LES MISERABLES never did.
And if Jennifer Lawrence doesn't win Best Actress, it'll just be all too goddamn typical.

I guess they figured they awarded a woman Best Director a couple of years ago, so that should suffice for another 80+ years ... disaster.
If only they felt the need to satisfy truly great work over nonsense ...

This is Adams's fourth best supporting actress nomination. Putting her in a very august group. Only Thelma Ritter has more (6). No one has five.
Only six others have four:
Ethel Barrymore
Lee Grant
Agnes Moorehead
Geraldine Page
Maggie Smith
Maureen Stapleton

Emmanuelle Riva or Quvenzhane Wallis is going to win Best Actress. Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence are going to split the votes and Rive and Wallis have the most wins behind those two. I'm betting on Riva since she's in the bigger film, though they might not be able to resist the charm of Wallis and the novelty of that win.
I'm thinking Amour is going to win everything except for Picture. Haneke has a very strong fan base in the Academy and it was only a matter of time before he broke through in a big way. Amour is bleak but very accessible compared to his other films.

Posted: 1/10/13 at 12:40pmI'd also like to add that I really hope this leads to more feature film work for Sally Field. I don't think she has a chance at winning but it was so nice seeing her in a substantial role on the big screen again. it's been way too long.

Posted: 1/10/13 at 12:50pmI guess I saw a different cut of Lincoln. For me, Sally Field was the only disappointing part of the movie, and I like her...I really, really like her. I got exactly what I expected out of Sally Field playing Mary Todd Lincoln, which was M'Lynn set in the 1860s.

Best Actress is between Lawrence and Chastain. No way is Wallis going to win. She's not an actor, she's a precocious little brat (bare in mind, I hate children in film and on stage, so I may be partial).
Chastain may get it simply because she's supremely respected in the business even though she's still a relative "new comer." Plus people may be so angered by Bigelow's snub that they may vote the picture and Chastain through. Lawrence, though a former Best Actress nominee, may come up a little short despite her great work in "Silver Linings Playbook." I'd be happy if either of these gals win ...

Jennifer Lawrence has the Weinstein factor which makes me think she will ultimately win. I think Wallis has age going against her. Chastain has to fight the fact the film is controversial, that her role is very much a cipher (if perhaps a Rorschach blot with so many varied interpretations), and not incredibly relatable. That said there could be a rally around her role being the only win for the film because it seems like an underdog for BP, Boal's script is in a tough category and its more 'minor' contributions nominated may fall prey to more industry-friendly films like Argo and Lincoln winning their categories.
That said, Riva is getting a lot of momentum and so is the film, and I would love it if she won. Cotillard won in a French-language film in that category not long ago so anything is possible, especially in a perceived 'weak year' for actresses Hollywood-wise.

I'm still stunned and angry that Cotillard didn't get nominated. She's so special.
I'm curious about Riva. I'm finally seeing "Amour" this weekend.

I think Chastain will win because: 1) She's a respected young actress (although young, she's a highly respected); and 2) Zero Dark Thirty will win something and this is a good place for that.
I like Chastain. I think she deserves it.

Here are some of the reactions. My favorite is Hugh Jackman's. He just seems like a class act.

I wonder if Ben Affleck momentarily thought he was nominated when the fifth director slot went to Be(h)n...Zeitlan.
Also, I tried not to follow the predictions so closely this year, but I thought Leo was considered a shoo-in for Django Unchained? What happened?

Jacki Weaver's performance stuck out as cartoon-y to me, so I am really displeased with her inclusion (ESPECIALLY when compared to the likes of Samantha Barks, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Nicole Kidman). Really a ridiculous nomination. That role does not merit Oscar attention, and her performance was sub-par.
I would echo the same of Alan Arkin, who, though very good in a small role, just doesn't even compare to the thrilling performances of Javier Bardem, Eddie Redmayne, and Leo DiCaprio.
Affleck and Bigelow seem to be the victims of over-confident voting, in that everyone probably just expected them to get a nod so they put their support in less favored options.

I'm a great admirer of Jacki Weaver's, and I think she really should have won a couple years ago for her brilliant work in ANIMAL KINGDOM, but I'm not sure I see a nomination for her work in SILVER LININGS. She was good, of course, but not Oscar-worthy.
On the other hand, I'd rather see Jacki Weaver get a nomination than see that goddamn Maggie Smith pick up another nomination for walking through that stupid MARIGOLD HOTEL thing.
