Never underestimate how unpredictable the oscar nods can be (thank goodness!). The big surprise for me today is no best director nomination for Affleck and or Bigelow (both of whom seemed as locked as locked could be), followed by the enormous amount of love for Silver Linings Playbook. Not that I didn't think it would do well today, but a best director nod for Russell over Affleck and Bigelow and acting nominations in all four categories (I loved Weaver in it, but am shocked at her nod as its kind of a one note role).
Thrilled for Amour.
The fact that the five best supporting actors have all won before and are all white guys with Hoffman being the only one who is under 50 could make that race completely wide open.

Anyone have a tally by number of noms per film yet?
Lincoln = 12
Life of Pi = 11
Les Miserables = 8
Silver Linings Playbook = 8
Argo = 7
Amour = 5
Django Unchained = 5
Zero Dark Thirty = 5
Beasts of the Southern Wild = 4
List of all the nominees
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

To quote Glenn Kenny on twitter, "Well at least we know where Harvey spent his money this year." That's a lot of SLP nods.
I am sure the ZD30/Bigelow snub is due to the controversy and the crazy part is the momentum and discussion of the film was moving toward neutrality with the likes of journalist Mark Bowden and Michael Moore, of all people, defending the film and proclaiming if anything it shows the futility of the war on terror. But alas, it happened after ballots were sent in.
Affleck, however, is surprising and I cannot put my finger on it. I guess there might have been an idea that if Bigelow was not nominated, why give Affleck a nod for a similar if easier to digest film? That's all I can think of, aside from looking back at other actor-director nominations, George Clooney was the last one IIRC, and thinking it does not really happen that frequently.

BTW: I'm so psyched for Naomi Watts! I watched The Impossible last night and was hoping she would somehow get in.

Posted: 1/10/13 at 9:33amI hated The Impossible but glad Watts was nominated. She gave a stellar performance in what I found to be a dreadful film. Plus she should have won for Muholland Drive.

Helen Hunt? UGH!
Never been a fan of Seth Macfarlane. Definitely not one now.

Macfarlane was as funny as a dead baby's grave.
But somehow, Emma Stone managed to be charming and sharp and seemed game for anything. I like that lady!
Stunned by the Bigelow snub. If anything, that film was a truly great achievement in directing.

Thrilled about Naomi Watts.
Surprised about Bigelow.
Really surprised about Les Miz for best pic.

Agreed regarding Stone. She was a hoot as a presenter (see link).

Posted: 1/10/13 at 10:05amI often enjoy MacFarlane, but if he was that snotty and above-it-all at the noms, I can't imagine what he'll do as host.

I thought they were great together and a real hoot.
But I'm just so thrilled for DeNiro, Weaver, Lawrence and Cooper along with all the others nominated today for SILVER LININGS, which to me, was the absolute best film of 2012.

I thought Marion Cotillard would be nominated.

I think John Hawkes should have been nominated over that creep Joaquin Phoenix-who himself said he didn't care about the nod. Shame on them for wasting a nomination which could've gone to a veteran who's paid his dues and really performed beautifully. (And for nominating the vastly overrated Helen Hunt. I never understood what was so special about her.)
I think Lincoln will take picture, supporting actor, director and actor and adapted screenplay (maybe-Argo might get this one).
I think Les Mis will have to settle for supporting actress (not my pick), and song.
Life of Pi will take the technical awards. I'm not overly thrilled with the noms except for Lincoln, which I really loved.

Posted: 1/10/13 at 10:17amWeaver doesn't have a prayer. It's between Anne Hathaway (who I think will take it) and Sally Field (who SHOULD). She's lucky she was nominated, it was a crowded field.

It's Seth MacFarlane. LOL
I find it funny that a harmless little Hitler joke is getting people all riled up. I'm surprised he didn't have a full orchestra on stage and sing the nominations while Jaime Foxx danced around in chains playing the triangle.

Genuinely disappointed and STUNNED that Kathryn Bigelow was not nominated.
All the Silver Linings Playbook love has me thinking Jennifer Lawrence will win. That, or the film will walk away the biggest loser come Oscar night.

Congrats to Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Tommy Lee Jones, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, Jessica Chastain, and Naomi Watts.
I really wanted 'Rise of the Guardians' to get a nomination for Best Animated Film. I didn't love 'ParaNorman' because I thought
Spoiler:
watching a very little girl be sentenced to death, and she was in fact killed, was a little too traumatic for young kids and for a PG film. As a young adult I even found it hard to watch Rue be killed in 'The Hunger Games' as well as the young Jedi children in 'Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith'. In most versions of 'Alice in Wonderland', including the Disney animated version, the Queen of Hearts orders Alice to be beheaded but she does not get away with it.

Some things to remember about the Academy. The Directors Branch is still pretty much an "old guys" party. Kathryn's win for a movie that people respected but nobody saw was a fluke, not the norm.
The Academy doesn't like Quentin Tarrantino, even if they like his films and admire his talent. HIs battles with SAG, WGA, and other unions (refusing to join for a while) before, during, and after his win, pissed a lot of "the gang" off.
I love the surprises!
The oldest and youngest record-beakers in the Best Actress category are pretty fantastic.
Also, I believe this is the first "Best Actor" nomination for a musical performance since Topol in Fiddler on the Roof (1971). That's 41 years.

This list is a borderline joke. How were Affleck and BIgelow NOT nominated? That's laughable.
"Flight" was the most overrated piece of boring, manipulative junk I've seen in ages. Best Screenplay and Best Actor? You're ****ing kidding me on this one.
Wallis over Cotillard? WHO decided on THAT? Wow ... just wow!!
