I'm not the least bit surprised nor disappointed by the outcome based on what I've gathered from Nina Kors and Zac Posen thru the years on that series. Dom and Alexandria clearly are BRANDS at this point. In Dom's case, Zac alluded to that a couple of episodes back. The lady knows her customer already. When her models took the runway I felt like a star was born. The only dud was the swimsuit but she recovered nicely. And at only 24, she has so much time to explore and grow. I'm anxious to see where she takes her printmaking next.
While I couldn't exactly pick up on Alexandria's versatility via her line, she stayed true to her aesthetic. I sense that a lot of young urban sophisticates along the Richmond-Boston corridor and in European capitals would rock the hell out of her casual chic pieces. There's something extremely sexy about Alexandria's garments in an covert way.
Onto the fellas...Justin is such a swell person but his choice of accessories arguably made a bigger impact on the runway than the garments themselves, apart from the unconventional challenge piece. To me, it was telling that he never once won a challenge going into the finale and had to be saved once by Tim Gunn. With his background in architecture and fondness for muted colors I'd really like to see what sort of menswear line he could produce. Of the four finalists, he's the one who seemed to struggle most with flattering the female form all season. While I was wowed by the construction of his unconventional challenge number, I thought it made his thin model look bulky. Hope to see him on All-Stars a season or two from now like Helen.
I formulated a theory about Bradon a few episodes back which explains to me at least why he came up short in the end. He is an inspired designer who struggles to overcome inertia and who draws inspiration from his environment. Any disturbance in his environment takes him off his game a bit. I think that he was much more disturbed by the Ken-foolishness and losing his muse model to Alexandria than was revealed in editing. Also, throughout the season he produced uber-fab garments but nearly always at the 11th hour. I never made a mental connection between his one-off stand-out pieces, that common thread. I got that Dom was a kickazz print-maker/print-designer; Alexandria the high priestess of casual-chic; and Justin a man who aspires to wed technology to fashion after technology gave him the ability to hear. But, I'm still left to wonder who is this technical virtuoso named Bradon as a designer.
By the way, Dom drops the deets on the off-camera shenanigans at the jump. This is why all-along I thought she was this seasons's Wendy Pepper minus the meanness. She was strategic as hell.
