I grew up in a very religious, very conservative town in both Texas. The teachers had no problems with sharing their opinions in class. Being gay didn't help.

I had one teacher teach the Bible as a "historical document". When I pointed out the unconstitutionally behind the assignment, she said that I should read more of it.

Back on topic, the second amendment was written to protect the colonists from the English soldiers, so unless you're expecting the red coats, you're in for a surprise.

Just watched Obama's speech to Newtown. A reminder why I am happy to have this guy lead us for the next 4 years!!

This. This article in the NY Times puts the real, raw human element in heartbreaking perspective.

So many funerals.

It's unimagineable.


"It was the first time that Veronique Pozner had seen the boy’s body since he was shot to death in his first-grade classroom two days before. I was curious to see what kind of reception the POTUS's speech was getting here.

Songanddanceman's comment:

"...The news here even reports how this will play out before it plays out, the death toll, interviews, misreporting, President Speech, name the shooter, call for a debate on gun laws....move on."

really caught my attention because it is so true. Our collective response to these tragedies is formulaic and predictable and--even when it is sincere--rarely represents more than lip-service to any idea of change. I made phone calls and knocked on doors and collected signatures for AIDS funding, and for Barack Obama, but never for gun control.

And so I don't know if President Obama's words struck anyone else as more than a very moving, very beautifully expressed piece of Presidential Theater. Only time will tell, of course, and it will tell pretty quickly, I suspect.

But it sure made me cry.

Well, we can try to back it up with activism. The November elections showed us that all that SuperPAC money had no influence on the election, so maybe now is the time to stop fearing the NRA money and realize its influence is illusory. Now it's time for the rest of us to hold up "Let's take our country back" posters.

Two of my friends from high school reside in this town. One has a daughter who attends Sandy Hook Elementary School, so this hit really close to home.

I live in DC and every morning I ride a bicycle to work. With the exception of the first day of school, never have I seen so many parents walking their children to school. It made me cry.

A coworker of mine lost his niece on Friday (his brother's 6-year-old daughter). I cannot even imagine what they must be going through. Rest in Peace. You were all taken from this world way too soon.

She was probably right. You SHOULD try reading it; by "it" I mean the US Constitution and specifically any reference to the Bible and religion. Not sure what your teacher was doing that was "Unconstitutionally".
