I freakin' LOVED this movie. I was going to go see it in the IMAX 3D tomorrow, but I am going to go see THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA tomorrow with a group of people, so I went and saw it yesterday in the regular movie theater. And jerby . . . what about the SPIDER-MAN 3 trailer? WOW!
I guess I'll be one of the first....
I disliked this movie immensely. I thought it was way too long- it could have stood to lose at least a half hour. Near the end of the film, there were many scenes where I thought the film was ending, but it was just a fade out.
I wasn't a fan of the plot, either. To me, parts of it were muddled and unclear. And, much of it just seemed to drag on and on and on. You could also see the big "twist" coming from a mile away.
The cast was all fine. I (surprisingly) thought Bosworth was wonderful, as were Spacey and Posey. Routh was just fine. It was somewhat creepy how he channeled Christopher Reeve.
Incidentally, I went with a group of seven, making us eight all together. We were split 4-4 on this film. Half really liked it, the other half, not so much.

I saw it yesterday with some of my friends. We all loved it, although we thought it was a bit too long. It thought the whole cast was wonderful (including Kate Bosworth who I thought was going to be terrible). I will definitely see it again.

(Sueleen) Credits are great, though. Does anyone know if they are in 3-D?
I just read on another message board that the credits aren't in 3-D. First sign of 3-D is a shot of a goat.
I loved the length. I think some of you won't mind the length upon a second viewing. There are many nuances that some would probably cut that I am very glad were kept in the film. The film had great substance, and I am glad it wasn't just a special effects driven action film.
I loved the length too. I thought it was perfectly paced (I am in the minority here)
I just got back from seeing it, and I loved it. While the plot was blah, the visuals and the music were superb. Plus, Brandon Routh is one sexy beast.
Just got back from seeing it. I liked it, even though I thought it was just a little too long. And I also enjoyed the way they did the opening credits.

Saw it today. It was incredibly badly written with absolutely no character development whatsoever, but everything else about it was of the utmost highest quality. It is the front-runner for Best Cinematography, in my mind.
Part of the problem is that Superman is such a bland and uninteresting character. He doesn't have the deep complexities of Batman or the Hulk or even Spider-Man.
All in all, I more respected it than I liked it.
I felt that the screenplay was fine. I liked the character development, relationships, and the way it was treated as a sequel to the first two supermans while still becoming something new.

"Superman is such a bland and uninteresting character."
Which explains, of course, why he has been so deeply ingrained into our culture.

Meh. In my mind at least. He just seems more like the personification of a deus ex machina more than an actual person like Batman.
I saw it Wednesday night and really enjoyed the movie. It was well done, and the acting was actually impressive.
A friend and I used to say, "That kid who plays Seth on One Life to Live would make a perfect Clark Kent/Superman." Apparently, others agreed. Anyway, I don't remember Brandon Routh being that horrible on OLTL, and I was surprised when he was canned. I think it was the character that was problematic because the role was eventually written out even after it was recast. I recall Routh was livid about his dismissal and that he ranted about it somewhere online.
I loved SUPERMAN RETURNS, which I saw on IMAX 3D, and I felt like a little kid again when the opening credits began. About 18 or so minutes of the film are in 3D, and I wanted more. This film is infinitely better than that pile of horse manure called X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, which ruined the Phoenix saga, and pretty much everything about the X-mythos.
Ugh...I wanted to like this so bad....
I thought it was bad. Bad acting, bad story, bad script. The only person who looked like they were having any fun with their part was Parker Posey. Everyone else was lifeless. Superman was in fact so lifeless at times I swore he was CGI. Did they make him look like that on purpose?
The plot is weak and moves at a snails pace. I felt like nothing happened for the first hour and a half. I don't mind long movies when the length serves the story. And for a film that's 2 hours and 40 minutes why does Superman only have like 5 lines of dialouge?
I must have seen a different version of the film. that or some of us just have very different wants for a superman film.
I just read Roger Ebert's review and, for once, feel it's pretty spot on. Don't read it if you haven't seen the movie though, it contains some major spoilers.
Roger Ebert's Review of Superman Returns
i'm going to read that when I get a chance. I realize not everyone liked the film. but the good reviews outweigh the bad and it makes me think that some people are just disappointed.
Roger Ebert is an idiot. He lost all credibility in my view when he kept on touting on and lavishing (undeserved) praise upon CRASH, which is one of the worst and most insulting films of all time. I read the Ebert review of SR and it sounds like he's looking for a cartoonish Superman, which is not what Bryan Singer intended to deliver.

What I meant was that Ebert seems to be looking for a campier and more comedic Superman, as he says that it apparently "is no fun being Superman."
Yeah...well I think what he was referring to is the way the original film made Superman fun but never really crossed the line into camp.
I just can't let those comments about crash stand. it won best picture. it is loved by many. build a bridge!
Yeah I wasn't going to say anything but calling Crash "one of the most insulting movies of all time" is a little extreme.
Brandon Routh looks and sounds so much like Christopher Reeve it's scary. I got chills whenever he first spoke.
