Great view of the cat fight... The true reason I keep posting on this thread.

Hehe I see your point. To be quite honest it creeps me out too. Im sure I can overcome that though and enjoy it. Thanks!
Well, you can say you don't like it and I'd be fine with that. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions.
But I, for the life fo me, cannot figure out what in the world you could find that is "obnoxious" about the score.

It's ugly-sounding to me. It rambles on and on, and it isn't melodic. Just obnoxious.
Sigh. I can't handle the old "It isn't melodic" stuff.
I seriously don't get that argument. I, personally, find a lot of Sondheim's songs more melodic than even Herman. I guess it's all relative.

Well, is annoying a better word? The score annoys me. I don't like hearing it. That's generally how I feel about things that I find obnoxious. At least I stayed the two-times I saw it (I do love Angela Lansbury and I had friend in it). My wife walked-out, that how much she hated it; and her former boyfriend was in the show!
Pinky--I don't think you should buy the CD. Most of Sondheim is an acquired taste, this show more than some others. You obviously haven't acquired enough of it yet to appreciate a show with this tough and uncompromisingly cynical a worldview. Read this lyric out loud and decide for yourself if you're strong enough to take Sweeney Todd:
There's a hole in the world
Like a great black pit,
And it's filled with people
Who are filled with SH*T,
And the vermin of the world
Inhabit IT--
BUT NOT FOR LONG!
They ALL deserve to die!
Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett,
Tell you why...
Because in all of the whole human race, Mrs. Lovett,
There are two kinds of men--and only two:
There's the one staying put
In his proper place,
And the one with his foot
In the other one's face.
So anything non-melodic is "obnoxious"? If what you mean by "not melodic" is "does not end phrases with an perfect authentic V-I cadence and/or stay in the tonic key and/or its relative minor throughout", then yes, I suppose the score is non-melodic. However, if one applies the *DEFINITION* of melodic, that is, having melody, and by melody, one means a rhythmically organized sequence of single tones so related to one another as to make up a particular phrase or idea (which, at last check, is the exact definition OF a melody), then I'm going to have to say that his music is ALL melodic, because, complex though the relationships may be, the individual pitches of his vocal lines are all *very* related to one another, and they CERTAINLY convey an idea. I don't find that obnoxious at all, I find it artistic and creative. Obnoxious could perhaps be better applied to the endlessly predictable, "melodic" score of Beauty and the Beast or Aida or Phantom of the Opera. Pretty, yes, but substantial? Hardly. I like a little *music* in my music...
Then again, maybe I'm just a big, bitchy music geek and nobody else cares about this stuff.

And, Priest, there are many things that I love that others don't; and I don't quite get why. Does it really matter? I was obsessed with the soundtrack to A CHRISTMAS CAROL: THE MUSICAL, which most people hated. Most. That doesn't make me like it any less. At least most people seem to like SWEENEY TODD.
"Does it really matter?"
Like I said, You have every right in the world to dislike it.
Just, I find 'obnoxious' such a harsh word.
Not melodic?

Pinkgurl, you might consider looking at your library for a copy, or borrrowing it from someone before investing in it.
People tend not to be fence sitters about Sondheim - in my experience you either love it or you hate it. It is best to find out which you are before you start shelling out the dough for the CDs. As for dark, it is a musical about a man that slits the throats of his shaving customers and a woman cooks them into pies. Hairspray this ain't! I think it is an amazing musical (though the whistle hurts my ears, as does Rapunzel's annoying scream in Into the Woods) and it is worth purchase without a doubt.
Have you seen the PBS airing of the production with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury? Rent it if you can. Then make a decision on whether you want the recording....

Well I adore "company" and "into the woods" so I do love Sondheim. I remembered I have a friend who might have this CD so I will talk to him and see if I can borrow it. Thanks for everything guys :)
I apologize for suggesting Idina should place Mrs. Lovett - the role should totally go to Chenoweth.
