Robin Meade even reported it on CNN this morning shortly after it happened. Definitely sounds like quite a controversy... I am interested to see how fired up Bela gets!

Hey there! I am missing this thread on the weekends with my home computer down!

Yeah, Bela was not happy with the scoring and made that quite clear.

Have to say one of my favorite events this weekend turned out to be the women's marathon. The end was good but I was really into the shots of the city as they were running. It was so interesting seeing the Forbidden City right there in the middle of the modern city. I felt really bad for the British woman. I wonder if they will come down on her this time like they did when she pulled out of the race in the last Olympics?

Happy for Phelps but kind of tired of all of the interviews and I really wish they would interview the rest of the team that helped him get there. (I am probably late posting about Phelps but just got to my work computer!)

And what about those Jamaican Runners! (Ju makin' me crazy!) That just kept running through my mind when they ran. Too many MTV Legally Blonde viewings I guess!!

I am sick of China cheating and everyone being afraid of calling them on their shenanigans.

The whole age fiasco, and the apparent bias in some of the judging has really compromised the Olympics.

The Chinese sports apparatus is the new Soviet Union...

And, now for some levity...

Oh geezus... all this talking about what's gonna happen tonight was too tempting, and I clicked-over to NBCOlympics.com...

*grumbles to self*

This is going to be a FUN broadcast! I'm not talking the rest of the day, so I can conserve energy for full-force screaming this evening.

Keeping-up with my regular "duties" on this thread :)

AUGUST 18/19 PRIMETIME AND LATENIGHT BROADCAST SCHEDULE

8:00p - 9:00p

The women's trampoline final and night two of individual event gymnastics competition (men's rings and vault; women's uneven bars). On the uneven bars, Moscow-born, Texas-raised gymnast Nastia Liukin is a three-time world championship medalist. Plus, track and field: The men's steeplechase, 400m hurdles and long jump; also, women's pole vault.

9:00p - 10:00p
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who have claimed three straight world titles and the 2004 Olympic crown, play Cuba's Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes in a women's semifinal beach volleyball match (LIVE ET/CT).

10:00p - 12:00a (8/19)
Gymnastics coverage includes the women's trampoline final and night two of individual event competition (men's rings and vault; women's uneven bars). On the uneven bars, Moscow-born, Texas-raised gymnast Nastia Liukin is a three-time world championship. Plus, track and field coverage features the men's steeplechase, 400m hurdles and long jump; also, women's pole vault.

12:30a - 2:00a (8/19)
The men's individual springboard diving semifinal. Also, track and field gold medals in the women's 800m and discus throw. Plus, a women's beach volleyball semifinal.

Because we have a lot of Gymnastics events still ahead of us in the Women's and Men's Individual Event Finals, this might be helpful for those who're still confused how judging works...

OFFICIAL OLYMPICS GYMNASTICS SCORING METHOD

Gymnastics' new code of points went into effect after judging controversies rocked the Athens 2004 Games. The new code was ratified in late 2005 and was first implemented in 2006.

A complete score is now made up of two parts, A and B. The first, the A score, or the start value, is an assigned degree of difficulty.

The second part of a score, the B score, is an execution score. Six judges vote. The high and the low are tossed per the rules.

That leaves four scores. Those four are averaged. That average becomes the B score. Add the A and B together and you get a complete score.

Per the rules, Gymnastics does not permit ties (or sharing the podium). Thus, there are tiebreaker rules:

The first tiebreak is the B score. Whomever has the higher B score (assuming the contesting A scores are different) is first.

The next tiebreak: the judges drop the next-highest deduction. That obviously leaves three judges' scores instead of four -- or to be precise, the marks those three judges gave for deductions.

Another way of getting to that math: Take the B scores of the three judges from that second tie-break, add them together and divide by three.

Whomever has the higher B score is first.

Shawn does have one more event final left--the balance beam.

Men's diving was on this afternoon. We have a tv at work so I caught some of it. I wish I didn't have to stay up so late to see it. (I am assuming the late night broadcast is a repeat of today)

We have not had success in diving thus far! I assume there is "high" diving coming up soon?

Dear China, If you want respect as a super power in these Olympics, play by the rules and stop buying the judges in the gymnastics competition.

And you're welcome, NYadgal. It is entirely my pleasure!

Can BOLT make it look any easier? It's like a walk in the park for this guy!

Not a lot of us seem to be following Equestrian, but here's a pretty photo of the America Gold Medal winner, Will Simpson atop Carlsson vom Dach:

Which idiot chose the equestrian venue? It is directly under the flight-path of the airport. So many horses have been spooked.

What was the little brouhaha regarding the Brazilian volleyball team that the broadcasters were talking about? Something about the gals wanted a certain court? My cable connection was sputtering and the sound kept cutting out.
