OK, so the finish of that 4x100 race was one of the most amazing things EVER!

That 4x100 relay was AMAZING. I couldn't believe the last leg! My entire family jumped up and screamed at the finish.

I used to be a swimmer, and my best time for the 100 free was a 1:09.

Their finish was a :46.

I suck.

I love me some Michael Phelps.

Some quick stats about that race:

the top five teams were all under the previous world record

Michael Phelps set the American record in the first leg

Although it's not an official record, Lezak swam the last leg in 46.0, which is 1.5 seconds below the world record

By the time I looked at wikipedia, the new world record had been updated

My best time on the 100 free was a 1:04, so I suck too.

That was a truly legendary finish. That's the kind of stuff Olympic moments are made of.

The fact that the French team promised to "smash" the Americans made it even better.

Speaking of Phelps, if there was ever an athlete who could win break Spitz' record, it's Phelps. I've never seen an athlete so intensely focused and driven before (yet, he still manages to appear charming and affable in the endless interviews he has to give).

AHH.

I still can't believe I saw that finish. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen in a sport.
Ever.

You know, going in to that 4x100, I wasn't really rooting for the US to win it, as much as I was rooting for France to lose it. I didn't really care who won, as long as it wasn't them! That the US team won it, just made their loss sublime!

I mean, step back and soak in what MILLIONS of people just witnessed, screamed, shouted...

Just like Kerri Strugg, Michael Johnson, Thorpe v Phelps... this is going to be a Summer Olympic Memory I'll personally never forget!!

Did anyone catch the Women's Indoor Volleyball match against Cuba? They lost in straight sets but I am HOOKED. And I am not sure why.

Another nice tidbit from the 4x100 swim relay: the guy who lead off the race for Australia broke the 100 meter world record that had been held by that obnoxious Frenchman (leadoff swimmers in relays can set records).

Regarding the "fake" fireworks. I had no problem with them. I was on the phone with my ex watching them and I said "It seems some people would be getting burned". So it was for safety reasons. I remember they were setting them off a week ago and wondered why. They said it was a trial but they were probably filming them for the opener.

I still can't get over that race! Really, what is the point of smack talking? Doesn't that just pump up your opponent? I know that is the effect on Phelps.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....Mark Spitz is now joining the "bitter" party.

Seems he is upset that no one has invited him to the Olympics to watch his record possibly get broken. He's also annoyed when he went to Athens that they never once showed him on television. He even goes so far as to say that he should be the one presenting Phelps the gold medals.

If he was so interested in watching his record potentially be broken, he could have just gone to the Olympics. Why did he think he had to be invited?

Oh, because just going wouldn't get him the attention and publicity that he wants.
Bitter, party of one!
