re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

Personally, I'm gunning with Emily Blunt to slip in on the Supporting Actress race.

Likewise.

She could replace either of the Babel ladies as far as I am concerned.

The two Babel gals are set. If she's replacing anyone, I feel it will be Breslin.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I agree with the Babel girls being pretty much locked for nods. I was referring to personal opinion rather than what will most likely happen. I was not a fan of Babel or any of the performances.

Oh, and is anyone else out there wishing, hoping, and praying for an upset in Best Actress by way of Streep or Dench? Yes, please.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

Time to change your predictions, folks. AMPAS announced a shortlist for FORGEIGN FILM as Apocalypto and Letters From Iwo Jima are NOT eligible!!

The nine pics are "Days of Glory" (Algeria), "Water" (Canada), "After the Wedding" (Denmark), "Avenue Montaigne" (France), "The Lives of Others" (Germany), "Pan's Labyrinth" (Mexico), "Black Book" (The Netherlands), "Volver" (Spain) and "Vitus" (Switzerland).
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

Oh, gosh, no! I am wishing, hoping and praying for Mirren to win the Oscar she SO richly deserves. Besides, Streep and Dench already have one (in Streep's case, two) and she doesn't.

I refuse to live in a world where Renee Z. has an Oscar and Helen Mirren doesn't. It's just wrong.

Foreign film predictions...

Water
Black Book
The Lives of Others
Pan's Labyrinth
Volver

I saw a screener of DAYS OF GLORY recently, and I'm fairly certain it will replace BLACK BOOK on your list. The other four are definite. PAN'S LABYRINTH will win.

Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

That's wierd. I saw "Days of Glory" on the list of finalists, and I definitely meant to put that down.

PS - Penelope is amazing.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

PS - Penelope is amazing.

I know! I was totally blown away by her in VOLVER. I think she could have a chance in a weaker year.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I agree. If Helen Mirren were not to win, I would want Cruz to win instead. SO BRILLIANT.

I don't think Blunt should receive an Ocar nomination. Her work was not Oscar worthy. Neither was Arkin for SUNSHINE.

Disagree on both counts. I thought both were brilliant comedic performances.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I don't think Carrel, sadly, has much of a chance at a nomination but who knows...I definitely think one of the The Departed boys will pick it up.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I revisited LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE yesterday, and I changed my opinion on Arkin. He is nomination-worthy, in my opinion. His "**** a lot of women" speech is perfectly executed.

I agree with Munk about Blunt, though; she is good, but not of the caliber of the other women being considered.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

Both Arkin and Blunt are good, yes - but not Oscar worthy. Blunt is not better than Breslin, Hudson, Barraza, Kikuchi, or Blanchett.

Arkin is not better than Honsou, Nicholson, Murphy, Pitt, Haley, or Sheen.

Oh, God, I don't think so.

Honsou broke your heart - what a brilliant performance.

Drama will always trump comedy in my book. To be moved is memorable. To laugh is only momentary.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

so is it a consensus that Streep will not be nominated? I certainly hope she will be but I'm pulling for Mirren to win. I have been in awe of her for the past couple of years now and she blows me away in everything she's in...not that Meryl doesn't either.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

A consensus? Meryl Streep WILL be nominated, it is as close to a guarantee as a prediction can get.

Blunt was better than Breslin, although a nomination for either would make me very happy.

Arkin is not better than Honsou, Nicholson, Murphy, Pitt, Haley, or Sheen.

I'll give you every other name, however... While Pitt was decent (he's been SO much better before) and Murphy got soul (comeback of the year), but I think Arkin's got them both beat.

so is it a consensus that Streep will not be nominated?

Best Actress is locked tight. Streep will be nominated.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I really hope DREAMGIRLS gives THE DEPARTED a run for the Best Picture award.

I also hope to G*d that Ryan Gosling gets at LEAST a nomination for his performance in HALF NELSON. I just rewatched it a few weeks ago at a theater that I just happened to stumble upon and it struck a cord in me that it hadn't before (I loved it before but this time; his performance and something about the film as a whole hit me hard). It's an incredible movie and one of the best performances of the last ten years.

I hope he shocks everyone and wins...even though that's REALLY wishful thinking.

Also, if it was up to me, Cruz would win Best Actress. She was simply phenomenal (as was Mirren, don't get me wrong).

Also, RE: the DREAMGIRLS songs...how many do we think will get nominations? "Listen" is a lock for a nomination and will probably win and I think "Love You I Do" may sneak in there but I think all three getting mentions is again, wishful thinking...they're all great songs and deserve to be nominated but I don't think they will.

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

Loved Gosling, but I don't think he had much of a chance at being nominated unless he beats out Will Smith. And that's if Sacha Baron Cohen isn't already taking his or someone else's place.

I have a feeling only "Listen" will be nominated.

I think he will get the fifth spot, and I don't think Cohen will get nominated (deerving as he may be). The last time they went for such an outrageous (and brilliant) comedic performance, it was for an overdue movie star in a huge hit (Jack Sparrow).

re: The 2007 Oscar Predictions Thread

I do too, and that's sad. "Love You I Do" is a much better song.
