As wonderful as Carmen Maura was in VOLVER, I highly doubt that she will earn a Supporting Actress nomination. Also, I think A SCANNER DARKLY will take one of the Animated spots.

Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. I think I read that there are only going to be three animated nominees this year...something about there needing to be at least 16 resleased to bump it to 5, and the 16th got pushed back till next season.

I don't think A Scanner Darkly has really been picking up many (if any) awards/nominations, so I'd be shocked if it gets an Oscar nomination (especially if it drops down to 3 from 5).

If only three, then CARS, HAPPY FEET, and MONSTER HOUSE.

And AC, I agree, but every time I go to replace her, I can't decide on who it would be. Suggestions? The Supporting categories are interesting this year. I took out Brad Pitt for BABEL after seeing the film for myself.

I think her spot will go to Adriana Barraza from BABEL. I also think that Catherine O'Hara will take the spot you've given to Shareeka Epps. I think Maura is more deserving than Barraza; however, I can't imagine her getting a nod seeing as she was passed over at the Globes and all major critics awards.

Capn, I'd replace Tobey with either Mark Wahlberg (The Departed) or Brad Pitt (Babel) I just don't think the Good German or Tobey is getting enough positive attention for any sort of nomination.

And I also don't think Eastwood will get two nominations...I think people will just focus all of their Eastwood votes on Iwo Jima, and that way he'll have a better chance of actually winning instead of possibly splitting the vote. Inarritu or Greengrass will probably take the spot, though who I'd ACTUALLY like to see take that last slot is Cuaron for Children of Men...but you can't have everything, I guess :0)

The race this year seems like it's pretty easy to predict. I'm staring to guess some of the winners already.

Picture: Dreamgirls vs. Departed- It's up for grabs folks. Really too close to call, but they're locks

Actress: Mirren- She was superb. She was absolutely superb. Now I've said that about a lot of performances in many different mediums whether it be film, TV or theatre and sometimes they haven't always won, but this is a lock.

Supporting Actor: Murphy- Talk about a comeback! Nicholson has won plenty of Awards. He's great. However, Eddie Murphy has given us his best performance since the 80s. His singing is spot on and dramatically, he owns the part.

Supporting Actress: This category makes me crazy. Jennifer Hudson is terrific, but on terms of pure acting, Catherine O'Hara is brilliant. However, Hudson has gotten most of the press, sings a damned good rendition of "And I Am Telling You..." and plays her part wonderfully. If the Accademy wishes to give the Award to an actress, I'd say Catherine O'Hara should win and will win, if they wish to give it to the press' darling and a magnificent singer, I'd say Hudson will win.

Director- Okay, I've hated every film Clint Eastwood has ever directed. Million Dollar Baby bored me to tears. I just don't like him. Might be a nice fellow, might have some talent, I just don't care for him. Scorsese really deserves it. He should and I think will win.

Isn't there a rule that someone can't be nominated twice in the same category, unlike at the Oscars - so if Eastwood gets a nom, it can only be for ONE of the two movies?

I've seen surprisingly few of the potentials this year - but I'm betting on Mirren/Whitaker/Murphy/Hudson as acting winners, Scorcese FINALLY winning director, and, with The Departed NOT winning dramatic movie last night, Dreamgirls edging the lead on best movie.

A person only can't be represented twice in the acting categories. So, although it's kinda unlikely, Clint Eastwood could get directing nominations for Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Soderbergh did it in 2000 with Erin Brockovich and Traffic.

I predict there will be an upset and you'll see Anika Noni Rose nominated along with Hudson for Best Supporting Actress...

EDIT: And the rule is an actor (or actress) can only be nominated once in any of the acting categories. Since there are two "male" categories (for example), an actor could receive one nomination per category. But they can't receive two in the same category.

This is not true for any branch other than the Actors branch. (Which is why there have been directors, writers, music writers, costume designers, etc., with multiple nominations within the same category.)

This is no longer possible for actors, though.

Anika Noni Rose will not get a nomination.

Her role, even on stage, is a minor role. However, with the deletion of "Ain't No Party", her character has become even more of a "supporting" role. I think she gave a great performance, cute as can be. But its the role, not the actress in this case.

Also, to put her in the same category as Hudson is completely outrageous.

Maybe if Hudson was being considered as a Leading, but since she isn't, Rose's chances are, sadly, slim to none.

Personally, I'm gunning for Emily Blunt to slip in on the Supporting Actress race. She took a role that was nothing on paper and made a wonderful character, warts and all, out of her. She could replace either of the Babel ladies as far as I am concerned.
