Belle of Amherst - one of the greatest experiences of my life. Probably the most 'real' actress I've ever had the priveledge of seeing.
Oh PrincessMimiChica, where are you??
My favorite performance of hers is still MEMBER OF THE WEDDING, tough to find video, but worth every penny.
Also, EAST OF EDEN, thank God for directors like Kazan who didn't always go for the obvious, "pretty girl" casting choice, we could use more of that nowadays. She was soooo sexy!
*chest pains*
the only actress who has garnered the most Tony awards ever - five
okay i'll google her kissmycookie
Didn't she do a television version of ANASTASIA?
I could swear I saw her get shot with her (Romanov) family just before I was sent to bed about one million years ago.
ah, Marquise, the male equivalent of the princess... at least you're looking it up... she refused to...
i loved her in the Haunting and in Member of the Wedding... wasn't she on Knots Landing also?
okay now i know who she is, anyone who co-starred with james dean in a movie is cool in my book.

Glebb - I didn't see anything listed on imdb.com - unless it had a different title.
That is why I am hoping someone at BWW.COM might have seen it.
Maybe it was me and I just don't remember who I am. :)
Thanks for checking DGrant and Happy Birthday (again). :)

Glebb - not a problem at all. One of my gifts was finding out that Belle of Amherst had been filmed - I'll have to look into finding it!
And, thanks again
Gotta sign off and get over to Ravinia. I hope to come back to some good stuff when I get back (late) tonight. Good day all!
I LOVE Julie Harris.
As mentioned in another thread, I saw her in "The Gin Game" and it was one of the best theater experiences of my entire life. I remember visibly shaking before the show started- I was so excited about seeing her in person, I couldn't believe it was actually happening to me. What a thrill!!
Yeah, she was on "Knots Landing". I used to watch that show all the time- in fact I think I've seen every single episode... She was really good in it. I can still recite the scene where her son (played by Alec Baldwin) falls off the roof..."I don't CARE! I don't care that I was a bad mother...or that Jonathan beat you! All I care is that you have become a MONSTER!"
Ah.....memories.
I've had the good fortune to see her live in The Gin Game, The Glass Menagerie, and The Belle of Amherst. She is has earned 5 Tony awards from 10 nominations.
I wish I could find a copy of the Pygmalion she did for TV as well as The Belle of Amherst. There are so many treasures from TV that have never been released.
What an amazing talent.
I was actually involved in the production of THE GIN GAME. Not only is she one of the greatest talents of our time (perhaps all time), she is a true lady. She has this incredibly calming presence about her.
Ok now I'm officialy jealous, Rath.
Actually, BELLE was released - I have the DVD and it's great!

bwaylover - THAT's what I was hoping to hear! I saw 'Belle' live, is the film a good representation of it? I would LOVE to have a record of that evening!
I have to get that too!!

on a side note, I saw Cronyn and Tandy do the Gin Game - WOW!!!

One of the great ones. I saw her in "The Belle of Amherst," "The Glass Menagerie" and "The Gin Game" and she was brilliant (by the way, DGrant, "The Belle of Amherst" and "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" are available on DVD and VHS through Amazon -- check the link below).
She was also the very last of a certain breed of stage star that doesn't exist anymore -- she believed in touring and touring, far and wide all over the country to cities large and small for years at a time. A generation or two ago, the Lunts and Katherine Cornell and Helen Hayes (and Harris) would spend more time on the road than they did on Broadway and felt a moral obligation to take theatre out to the masses who couldn't make it to New York every year. Until her stroke a couple of years ago, Harris (in her 70's) was still touring the country. A remarkable woman and a great actress.

I have to say, DGrant, that as much as I love Durning in most things, his talent was dwarfed by Harris's. I would imagine Cronyn and Tandy didn't have that problem with each other.
It's actually been a while since I've seen it - I've lent it to a friend. But from what I recall (and remember I didn't see the show live), it was great.

No, they certainly didn't, Rath
And Margo - it is precisely BECAUSE she believed in touring that I got to see her - I saw Belle in Scottsdale, AZ - at a beautiful new space. It was like she was blessing it.
It's a shame that more stars don't do that. I would love for Bernadette to bring Gypsy out west.
