There's no way Alex is going to win over Jim Dale. I haven't even seen 3penny and already I know that. But I am... perplexed. Alex over Mano? Alex is brilliant in Sweeney, and I love him for what he does, but over Mano? I think Alex's role is more ensemble-y than Mano's is, first of all. Second of all... fuuck this, I'm in a bad mood as it is from something else, I'll probably just end up biitching about my stupid choir. So, nevermind.

These awards have nothing to do with a fan following. It has to do with a group of old men with gray beards and an affinity for sexual bribery. Right?

Gypsy, you may be onto something. (The scary thing is that I'm actually serious.)
I keep thinking about (what little I know of) Mano's performance; like Chica, our wonderful authority on all things Manoel Felciano, said, so much of what he does is so subtle. Watching little clips on Broadway.com or wherever, I've noticed things like tiny shifts of position or if he hardens or softens his facial expression - tiny, subtle touches that, admittedly, might be lost on, say, an audience member sitting far back, but still have a powerful impact.
As I said before - if I were only a little more reckless, I would buy a train ticket to NYC right now and lotto (edit: student rush) the first possible performance of Sweeney Todd.

Ah, good to know. Thanks. I edited it ^.
My mom called and told me the noms. I am extremely happy for Alex, but like pretty much all of you, I'm just confused. Of course, I do also seem to be confused about all of the DD noms in every category, so maybe I just don't agree with them. For Mano not to be recognized in any of the major awards would honestly be heartbraking. He just deserves it so much. He has invested more in this role that I ever believed possible. When he is on stage he IS Toby, and he is haunting, and tragic, and frightening, and beautiful (I don't mean physically, but...). I, too am hurt by the "Mano Mania" references. I'm only in 8th grade, but theatre is pretty much my life, and to see someone put so much into a preformance and consistantley give so much to an audience is an amazing thing. I personally also look up to Mano because in terms of his education, he did pretty much EXACTLY what I want to do (BA, act, then MFA). It certainly doesn't hurt that he is cute, but for people to assume that that's why I respect him so much is unfair, especially when it hurts him.
::end rant (for now)::
Pretty much everything I would have said has already been said. I think Chica and I share a brain sometimes. As I said earlier, I concur with The Chica
And of course in the end, Mano was the smart one. I'm sure he was prepared for this, but knowing that people were buzzing around talking about noms and mentioning his name, I'm sure he wanted it. Who wouldn't? It's not even about "getting an award" - it's more about what the award would mean. Clearly Mano is never going back to being a pit singer again, but I'm sure having an award to his name could open up doors for him in the future. But really, knowing how much meticulous thought was put into this role, an award would have just, as Chica said, validated all the work.
I guess I'm not really personally invested in this. I just....can only imagine how much he would have wanted it. It just means Mano needs to do another amazing "Tony-worthy" performance after Sweeney
Oh, yes. Regarding this "Mano Fan Club" - what utter bullsh*t. The overwhelming amount of comments made on the Drama Desk Noms thread, the Drama League Noms thread, and the Outer Critics Circle Noms thread regarding Mano consisted of many people who have never even posted in this thread. Hell, this thread has no more than 10 regular posters, if that. So to generalize and make a statement like this is only slightly ridiculous. Anyone who goes to the stage door can see that Mano is not quite being mawled for autographs - not that Sweeney attracts much of a teen following anyways.
I know he'll end up okay because just BEING in Sweeney and ddoing the work he's done has been huge for his career. I just hope he can do this kind of work again. I actually raned to my mother for 10 minutes on the phone. Honestly though, look at some other categories. No LaChanze? No Rabbit Hole? No Mendes? They're choices in general were really wierd.
You think it's because Alex has had the more "conventional" musical theatre career? Or daddy Gemignani?
Sorry, I'm just being a little reckless right now, not feeling well at all after a pretty lame day. I don't want to take it out on Alex because I am happy for him. Just... confused.
Where are these "Mano Mania" comments? I've read the 2006 DD thread and haven't seen any...unless I'm blind, which could be very possible.
I think the "Mano Mania" one was in the Outer Critics thread, where someone said that he wasn't at all shocked that Mano had been "snubbed".

Everyone needs to just listen to some chill music and relax. Because stress, as I learned, kills. Listen to some Keren Ann, she's really chill and easy to listen to. Lower that blood pressure, my dears.
The fangirl stereotype pisses me off. And honestly, at this point, I'm not even going to dignifiy it with an explanation or disclaimer. I have not the energy.
Just... whatever. We're girls. We're fans. People find it easy to just say fangirl. It uses up a lot less syllables than to say other things.

Well, if you try to refute it, people are just going to tell you you're a delusional liar and think they can get inside your head; it's just not worth defending yourself.

Because, you know, it's impossible to be a fan of an actor who is good-looking and also be intelligent
It's annoying as hell, but there's nothing you can really do about it. There's always going to be generalizations.

Then vent away m'dear. I'm the same way. I know it won't do anything but it makes me feel better.
