Cause the serial killer must be manly.
... I have no idea. But I guess unless they're planning on putting Mr. E. on steroids, it ended up not being relevant after all.
Well, I think you forget that for all the weight he's lost, Raúl still has broad shoulders and a very deep chest. That will always make him look "powerfully built" no matter how skinny he gets otherwise. And they can do amazing things with costuming to make someone look more powerfully built than they actually are. (And its funny, I don't remember seeing that character description before).
Then again, as Emcee suggested, maybe it's not even relevant to the character any longer. Lord knows how many changes the script has gone through already. That's Hollywood for you!

I guess build is relevant for the same reason it is when you read a description of a character in a novel. It's one aspect of the character - certainly not the only aspect, but something to take into consideration, at least.
But he's tiny! Being so broad shouldered definitely has an extremely masculine cache to it, but I would never called him "powerfully built." Of course, what they can do with costuming and camera angles is another thing entirely, but without the aid of those things, Raúl isn't exactly what you think of when you hear "powerfully built."
But you can be...tiny and still be powerfully built. It's a question of proportion, and that describes Raúl quite well (just one of the reasons he appears to be, like, twelve feet tall on stage). And yes, they can do amazing things with cameras and lighting and all that stuff. Or maybe they just decided to cast against type.
But honestly, I think the character, as they've described him, would seem even creepier if he were just a normal, average looking...nerd.
If you consider Anthony Perkins in Psycho, he's this (albeit tall) skinny nerdy dude who is scary as hell, so yeah, I think that Raul can pull off "powerfully built."
I am still really hoping that they drop the pre-existing "multiple personality disorder" part and just make it a family man who becomes possessed...
That's the the casting breakdown makes it sound like it is. It definitely sounds like possession is implied, but I don't get the idea of mental illness from that blurb at all. I guess all of that could be read as some sort of metaphor for mental illness and "demons" and all that, but I'm almost inclined to assume that whoever reported the possibility of multiple personality disorders was just reading into it that way.
Unfortunately, multiple personality disorder is one of the most common and clichéd plotlines in Hollywood. If that is the cast in this movie, it's definitely not going to be the last. If you're concerned about the negative portrayal of mental illness in movies, there's another thread discussing the Sybil remake; it's airing on CBS Saturday.
Had another thought regarding this character. He's a family man, being possessed by a serial killer out to get all the teenagers born the day he was executed. Wanna bet one of those teenagers is the possessed mans own kid? There's potential for some really great emoting in that scenario.
I'm the last person to claim any expertise on horror movies, but it seems like there's a lot of potential here for a psychological drama that'll be plenty scary enough without having to resort to hacking and slashing and blood filling the streets and the screen.
But that's not what this genre is all about....
Why be possessed by a serial killer when you can be possessed by an evil ZOMBIE?!
Who needs emotion? Just bring on the zombies! Don't ruin all the fun.
I think it's being possessed by a serial killer that makes him an evil zombie.
Maybe we can have emoting zombies?
So he IS a zombie because he's possessed but not possessed BY a zombie?
This is officially too complicated for me.

This is gonna be my new favorite movie.
Is there any chance, any possible way (given his involvement in Leap of Faith) that Raúl might be able to do this? (I'm just assuming they'd want him...)
Bounce Will Bow at Public Theater This Fall
I don't know very much about the show, but I'm not sure there's even a part for him in it.
I would like, keel over with happiness, though. It's already 3/4 of my musical theater dream team.
Wouldn't that be amazing? The dates are just almost workable (assuming LOF starts prepping in January for a March out-of-town), but it would mean virtually no down time for Raul. But, like em, I have no idea if BOUNCE has anything suitable.
Well, I believe there is definitely a part for Raúl in Bounce. It's about the Mizner brothers, Addison and Wilson. Wilson is the charming, charismatic brother, and I think that part would be ideal for Raúl.
It seems the timing of the opening, closing and even extension dates for Bounce dovetail perfectly into the projected schedule for Leap of Faith, which is expected to start it’s out of town run in January or February, getting to New York in March-April-ish. It seems do-able. It’d be a killer schedule, but nothing he can’t handle, I think.
I have a recording of Bounce that was done in...2003, I think, with Richard Kind and Howard McGillin as Addison and Wilson Mizner. Some of the music is lovely, but reading the synopsis the shows seems...topheavy and unwieldy to me. Like it’s trying to be and do too much. And frankly, the music overall isn’t Sondheim’s best. It’s perfectly acceptable, and from any lesser mortal would be considered brilliant, but it isn’t really up to the standards of Sweeney or Sunday. I’m curious to hear just how much the show has been altered/fixed. If anyone else is interested in hearing any of Bounce, PM me.
This is stating the obvious, but wouldn't availability depend on when Leap of Faith is actually going out-of-town? I mean, we're all guessing dates here. There's a big difference between January and March, in terms of when rehearsals would start.
Frankly, I think people would be very quick to do some serious verbal ass kicking if John Doyle did another Sondheim show with Raúl so soon; unfortunately, even without the instruments, people want to make mountains of molehills and will use this to feed their one-trick pony claims. And as much as I want to see magic again, I don't want that. And he can create something beautiful with other actors, too.

lol to Michael McKean. That's such a "here comes trouble" picture..what a great cast.
Raul looks like he should be on an Animal Planet safari special or something. Very cute
Raul was on the Tony preview concert for literally two seconds, but it was nice to see him on TV again.
I wonder why those photos never showed up anywhere during the run.
I forgot all about the Tony preview concert, and by the time I remembered, it was more than half over. I'm sure someone will put it on YouTube, so no big deal. I kind of want to see this random Xanadu peformance.
It was quite random. All the other performances were very subdued with one or two performers and no action. Xanadu showed up with like 15 people, including dancers.
It's apparently an ELO song, so it wasn't totally random, but a few of my friends who watched it were like, "What is this? It's not in the show!"
Ah, well....it was just not meant to be.
