This a joke right? I like Ellen.... but no.
I thought she was a horrible judge on SYTYCD
I love Ellen, but this would be a horrible idea.

EEEEEP!!
I'm sorry, I think this is a BRILLIANT idea. Like.. actually amazing.
Sure, Ellen doesn't have musical experience, but that's not what makes a good judge! Of the other judges, Simon is the one with the least musical experience and Kara is the one with the most, but that doesn't make Kara a better judge than Simon does is?
Ellen has an AWESOME eye for talent. Pretty much all her favorites have always been my favorites. And I almost guarantee she'll be more articulate than Paula! It's not like we're talking about her replacing Simon here- it's Paula. Paula was great for her warm and supportive nature (which Ellen I'm thinking will be too), but as judging went, we ALL know how ridiculously aloof she always was. Plus Ellen is hilarious.
So it's just a completely winning situation over all in my book
I only wish she'd been a part of the show last year, because her interacting with Adam would have been the cutest <3
It's official...
No joke!

She was unbearable on So You Think You Can Dance?

I agree, she was HORRID on the dance show. Doesn't she have enough to do already?
Ugh....I think she's kind of annoying.
I knew they'd go with a "name" to get those falling ratings up. Now they're guaranteed to skyrocket.
This really bothers me. I think she's all wrong.

I didn't watch her on SYTYCD, but just for the record, American Idol is REALLY different than SYTYCD in terms of judging I think. Simply because dancing is basically a sport- it's so specific, and there's so much specific physical technique involved that you really have to be a dancer or at least have studied HOW to dance in order to be a good judge. I mean, I love watching SYTYCD because the things those people can do with their bodies amazes me, but I never feel quite right actually judging them because I simply don't know enough about dance to do that.
With American Idol, it's so much more broad because being a recording artist is a combination of so many different things. And it's definitely NOT strictly about vocal technique. So with the judging, it's about 1)having a good eye for talent/knowing who will be marketable in today's industry, and 2)being able to articulate critique well. It doesn't require as much expertise in the industry as it requires being a fan of music, and being able to sense which contestants the viewers will take to. And, well, I explained why I think Ellen will be great with those things haha.
Wow, I'm really surprised with the backlash. I think Ellen is going to do a fantastic job.
snl - On SYTYCD, Ellen kept trying jokes that landed flat and she didn't say anything constructive at all. All she said after the horrible jokes were, "Good job." I don't know that much about dance but I would have at least said, "That jump you did was amazing" or SOMETHING.
"I didn't watch her on SYTYCD"
",being able to articulate critique well. "
If you had seen her on the dance show, you'd know that she wasn't able to articulate or critique well. Her babbling had nothing to do with what she was there for. Maybe she'll be different on AI, but she was completely useless on the dance show.
Plus, on a personal note, her shtick is stale and I'm tired of it!
Really poor choice. I love Ellen, but not for this.
I had vowed not to watch this year. Now I will. So, it worked for me.
I also thought this was a joke. This is going to be interesting. Maybe even really bad. I hope I'm wrong because I like Ellen. However, I just don't see how she is a good fit for AI.

I have mixed emotions. I really like Ellen, but I'm not sure AI needs a comic on the panel. I'll watch, and I hope she succeeds, but I don't know. I can see her being very funny during the auditions, and I can see her banter with Simon actually being witty, but I can't see her contributing to criticizing beyond the initial auditions.
I love Ellen and I think she will bring a lot of high ratings. But aren't there unemployed people out there or someone else who doesn't already have a full time job?
Ellen jokingly said that she will now have a night time job. That's what people are doing these days.

I like Ellen but I don't think she will get me to tune into AI. I was hoping they would get someone in the recording industry.
Am I the only one that kinda believes Sandra Bernhard was seriously being considered now?
What could have been...
P
I like Ellen, she amuses me.
I do not think she is the right fit for this. The point of the judges is not to have a popular viewpoint, but to critique and help develop the performers. She simply isn't qualified. If this were a stand up comics show....she'd be great. Not so much here.
And I agree: she was a waste of space on SYTYCD. She wasn't terribly funny, and she couldn't contribute to ANY discussions. I can't see her being any different here.
Time will tell.
I love Ellen. On SYTYCD she was a guest judge, and wasn't really being serious.
I think it really depends on how she approaches this. If she can be serious about judging but funny at the same time, she could be good. If she just makes jokes the whole time, I don't think it will work.
