New York - congratulations!!! Can you please send your freedom across the Hudson? NJ is in some serious need of some equality. I may be moving back to NY soon anyways (not because of this vote, though this is certainly a pull.)

Anderson Cooper's interviewing Greg Ball who voted no saying it was a 'tough decision' but 'responsible' with the religious restrictions. That is so not saving his political future beyond his district but he is trying desperately to look moderate. Anderson looked a tad annoyed after that interview.

Cuomo's now speaking.

Congratulations!!! Because NY is so much larger than the other states that had previously passed marriage equality laws, the number of people who have marriage equality JUST DOUBLED!

Oh, and NY DOES NOT HAVE A RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT!

If any of my friends here decide to get married, PLEASE LET US KNOW WHERE YOU REGISTER!

And folks may not want to acknowledge this, but this bill passed because a few GOP legislators supported it.

Alec Baldwin is on fire tonight...after tweeting his support for the bill, somebody asked him had he read the bible...

I really hope other states are watching. In fact, I just tweeted Fat Pig Christie about it. Anyone feel like joining me in filling is twitter feed with #equalitytoday. And yes - I'm aware he doesn't actually read it but it still serves some purpose.

I am a Christian but I don't think faith practices should play a role in a government that does not attach itself to any faith/religious system tomorrow. I'm so happy that New York is finally giving freedom to all like our constitution says. I wish I could be there to celebrate with you guys!

I need someone to figure out the legality of a foreign same-sex marriage in the US. I am a citizen, but have residence here in Europe. We married here. Is our marriage valid in the states that allow same-sex unions in the US? She's not a US citizen. (she can't get a green card since we are both women...)

I am trying to decide if a New York ceremony needs to happen next year just to cover all of our bases.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

broadwaydevil, I don't think he can hide Sandra Lee during a presidential campaign like he did during his NY campaign. Maybe she'll straighten up her act and stop being a famewhore by then so he has a fair shot.

The White House released a statement on the passage, and it inlcuded this:

"The states should determine for themselves how best to uphold the rights of their own citizens."

Really??? It's not incumbent on our Federal government to uphold the rights of ALL citizens???

Obama's indecisiveness on this issue has annoyed me from the getgo, and I found it incredibly disingenuous that he had no problem taking all that money from the LBGT community Thursday night, but would not come out in support of same sex marriage in those important moments when the bill's fate was unclear.

madbrian - that is exactly why I watch all this with bemused detachment. Is it a bad thing that it turned out with a yes vote? No - but I still don't think it should be put to the states. I find the entire approach bogus (and not a little insulting.) It's all just deflection of the most blatant variety.

Obama has been disgusting me about gay marriage. It's sort of like how he acts toward the Latino base, I'm the better option, you'll never vote Republican, but I don't have the balls to actually do anything for you. (regarding gay marriage and immigration issues.)

Brilliant idea, Mr. Obama. Let's allow states to decide if people can actually have free speech, or freedom of religion, or even segregation.
