How do they do the analysis of people who aren't alive to take the test? Do they just study how they lived their lives, or is there a scientific method?

Yes, it's based on biographical evidence. I had a wise instruction though who pointed out what an inexact 'science' that is, tgough. Different practitioners have 'typed' historical figures completely differently, depending on what they choose to see in a person's life. Don't put too much faith in those predictions.
That's a very INFP thing to wonder about though.

Atrias, I believe they're making assumptions based upon their writings and what others said of their personality.
It's actually quite easy to make relatively accurate guesses of personality based just upon writings, and very easy once you truly know a person.
Can someone who knows please explain to me what ISFP is?

Undi - I can understand now why all of us get so flexible with our dinner, etc plans - we're all Ps!
I'm neither an NF or a P.
Moony's gonna ditch me now, I can tell.

Well, opposites can either attract or drive you to drink.
Son - you're so right!
We're opposites?

SOAG, on a similar note, I've found it so much easier to get along with other Ns than with sensors, especially SJs. I've found that when there's just "something" in the way of great conversations with someone -- i.e. we have common interests, similar values, comparable intelligence, but just can't seem to have a completely fluid and normal conversation -- it's usually because he or she is an S and I'm an N.
Granted, it doesn't always hold true -- an extremely close friend of mine is my opposite, an ISFJ.

The most influential element of personality type is the S/N difference. It is what informs you of what you see and how you see it.
Uh oh.

Yeah, but Rath you're a very high Feeler, so you bend over backwards to please others. If there was a difference, you'd work at not letting it bother you.
Myers-Briggs doesn't assess whether your personality type and another "get along." It's not about that. In fact, what MB instructors exlain is that we are all a little bit of ALL the "types." Sometimes I can be "thinking" rather than "feeling"...depending on the situation. These are simply your leanings. All types can "get along" with each other, and no type is "better" than another.
When you have the test and an assessment, you see how much of a "J" or an "N" you are...that's why I said I was "borderline J." There are things I like planned and settled and other things I like to keep open and fluid. Frankly, I was shocked to find that I landed as a "J." (But my husband wasn't surprisded at all!)
ISFJ
You are:
slightly expressed introvert
slightly expressed sensing personality
distinctively expressed feeling personality
slightly expressed judging personality
Well, my Sensing score is 62 and my Feeler is 25...

Then we'll use your sensing to keep track of details during our next gathering.

No, I wasn't saying that at all. I wasn't trying to imply that I see a sensor and automatically think, "oh, not going to get along with that person!" However, I do feel that it's easier to communicate with other Ns in general, likely because, as Bluemoon put it, what we see and how we see it is determined the S/N split. I find myself on the same "wavelength," so to speak, more often with other Ns.
Siamese dream, my post wasn't directed at you...I was addressing Shirley Jones' best friend.
Well, that's good then. I can't imagine not getting along with Moony ever.
Moonie??? What about ME? What, am I invisible????
Are you saying you're my opposite too?
Just great.
No, I'm saying that you only seem to care if you and Moonie get along.
I don't know how much more of this snubbing I'm going to be able to take. I've never been so insulted in all my life. (Well, actually, I have.)
