I agree with almost all of the other posts. I do, however, like the film of On The Town - it's different, but still fun. Pity that Sinatra couldn't have ONE good song though. "Lonely Town" perhaps.

Kangaroo, yes! Annie Get Your Gun makes my stomach turn.

But, to add to the list -- BRIGADOON. The film just lays there. Take a "singers" show and cast the movie with dancers particularly Cyd Charisse who can't act (and was dubbed), throw in some uninspired direction, cut the comedy numbers because of the censors and you have M-G-M's Brigadoon - one big bore!

Well, it's official. Between My Fair Lady and Brigadoon, I apparently have no taste in movie musicals whatsoever! re: What's THE WORST Hollywood Film Adaptation of a Broadway Musical?

there are just too many. basically EVERY movie musical ever based on a Broadway show irks me because something was cut, something was changed or someone fu*ked it up... plain and simple. the only movie musical I can watch and truly feel like the stage show was captured perfectly is the Bette Middler GYPSY. which technically doesn't even count because it never played in theatres. but, that's it. otherwise if it was filmed on stage i.e. Victor/Victoria, Cathy Rigby Peter Pan, Hugh Jackman OKLAHOMA! they're fantastic but again don't count as actually being a movie musical. except the DVD of CATS because David Mallet butchered that thing to death. it sucks. I hate it.

The animated King and I
Guys and Dolls....ugh
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat..last time I checked, the Narrorator needed to be able to sing
jesus Christ Super Star...what's with the purple shirts and jeans???
Godspell..biggest disappointment ever...stayed up till one in the morning to see it...arghh
Annie..the one with the guy from Titanic, Tim Curry as Rooster and Galinda from Wicked. That girl sucked as Annie.

Was that a fat joke?

"I like (no, actually, I don't like) how "Tomorrow" is sung under the credits of the film version of ANNIE but NEVER performed during the actual movie!"

Actually, the cast does perform "Tomorrow" when they visit FDR.

And I agree with you, CATS, about the filmed version of CATS. My big complaint is that they completely left out "Growltiger's Last Stand," one of my favorite numbers. Nothing against Sir John Mills, but he was the wrong guy for the role of Gus. Would it have been so hard to find a guy who could play Gus' fragility *and* Growltiger's macho bravado?

The Annie with Tim Curry as Rooster had Bernadette Peters as Lily. Cheno was in the 99 Tv version.

I think the only thing I liked about that movie was Carol Burnett. Whether the movie sucked or not I thought she was hilarious.

Not my beloved 82 Annie! I love the cast, even if the storyline is completely hacked to death. Bernadette and Carol rule.

And yes...Evita (Madonna and Antonio? Shame on you)

ACL - in "I Can Do That", he's supposed to show you what he can do - meaning tapdance and do a back flip. In the movie, what can he do? Swing from a freakin' rope! Hell, I'm a fat middle-aged man and even I can do that!

The movie version of The Boyfriend. I have seen it multiple times and have enjoyed myself but it just feels weird. Insted of just doing the show, they had to add a whole 42nd street feel to it complete with the "Come back as a star moment." I don't really know how I feel about it, but something just isn't right.

You should try watching The Boyfriend under the influence.
It's quite an experience.

I'm probably gonna get shot for this, but the newest, Phantom of the Opera, about killed me. Granted it wasn't helped by my friend in the seat next to me who bawled through the last half of it ("it's so... sob... beautiful!"); but, still. The "singing?" Ugh. No thank you.

oh true CostumeMistress, POTO was one of the worst I've seen.
Talk about raping, murdering and burying a score.
The instrumentals and orchestrations are beautiful but they had to ruin it with those voices.
