Zachary Quinto Comes Out

It means a lot to young gay people to have positive gay role models in the media. People they can look up to. Cooper has done a lot to help the GLBTQ acceptance movement, but it would be great if he publicly acknowledged his sexuality. As Mr. Quinto wrote, "it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality." Maybe Cooper will have a similar "instant" movement.
It is, of course, his choice. I think he could do a lot more good by coming out. And I doubt I'm alone.

Posted: 10/16/11 at 10:22pmTo me, it's insulting when a celebrity who everyone knows is gay doesn't acknowledge it publicly. They KNOW we as a society and as a minority desperately need well known faces standing up for us to make people feel less "threatened" by us. So when they go out with their boy/girl friends and everyone knows yet they deny it, they're telling the young gays and lesbians that they themselves are ashamed of it and that does nobody any good. So when someone like Quinto comes out, my reaction is "duh. And about FVCKING time!", not "Good for him, he must have struggled with this and it's such a hard thing to do"

The big difference for me with Quinto is that he's at the very beginning of his stardom. He's not someone who's been around for a decade or more who has a track record of hits and a resume ten miles long. He's also not a character actor relegated to "non-threatening" or "asexual" roles.
He has plenty to lose career-wise by coming out so soon after hitting it big in the movies.
I find it admirable. And I hope he has a long, successful career.

It's true that a publicly out gay public figure can help young people and can help the gay community. I just don't understand why knowing what a broadcast journalist does in his crib is important. As he transitions from being a "hard hitting" investigative journalist into being gay Oprah, maybe he'll open up his personal life a bit more (it'll be more important then).
But for now, whenever anyone mentions anything about Anderson Cooper hanging in his (fabulously decorated) glass closet I'm like, "Why isn't anyone on Shepard Smith's balls like this?"

Nobody is asking Anderson Cooper to tell the world that he likes rough bareback sex while blindfolded and gagged in a sex swing. Saying "I am a gay man" has NOTHING to do with telling the world what you do in your bed and THAT is the problem right there. Statements like that and attitudes like that that attribute coming out to the actual act of sex.

I think I stated pretty clearly in my post that it means a lot for young gay people to see positive out role models in the media. And being gay is about more than who you sleep with--it's about identifying yourself with a community and being proud of that part of your life.
I'm like, "Why isn't anyone on Shepard Smith's balls like this?"
No clue. Maybe because people don't like him--or his politics--as much as Cooper?

Posted: 10/16/11 at 10:54pmIt's a long-standing rumor. Whether or not he is, I don't know. He certainly doesn't make a public display with the guy he's seeing, a la Cooper.

1) "Being gay is about more than who you sleep with."
I agree with the both of you on that. But. . .
2) "Being gay is also about identifying yourself as part of a greater community."
That's not the function of a journalist.
Now if he was primarily a humanitarian, a businessman, or an actor, I'd completely agree.
And, you know, we do have people like Sam Champion and Don Lemon up and out there. It's just that nobody cares.
"No clue. Maybe because people don't like him--or his politics--as much as Cooper?"
Oh, I know it's because Anderson's both smoking hot and has a bigger media profile than Smith. It's just a gut thing that I have.
And, in a way, I think Shep Smith coming out publicly would be a much bigger deal, considering who his audience is.

It hasn't compromised Don Lemon's. (And, of course, this is not a question that straight journalists have to answer.)

Posted: 10/16/11 at 11:15pmI just don't see why being famous + being gay means that we should expect that individual to be an advocate for the gay community. Yes, I truy appreciate when an individual is an advocate for the community and I think it's important, but again I think it's a very personal decision. Cooper along with any other gay man/woman living in a "glass closet" should not feel obligated to be an advocate for the gay community just because they are gay.

I think there's a little bit of old perspective at play in this thread, as regards the industry. Mr. Maher's 'upward curve' may be very short, but it placed him at one of the prime locations - co-starring in a network series. That's a premiere gig in today's environment. And while there still might be some who work their way up into that position over a long period of time (a la Michael Emmerson,) it's become very common to tap into the lightening bolt mentality of the technical age and just manufacture status.
Speaking of that status, Mr. Quinto is acknowledged as one of the key players in a major studio investiture for a franchise - one that keys specifically to the comic-con crowd. Like it or not, that makes him a full-fledged player and star in the industry these days.

Except that everyone in middle American now pictures you with a dong in your mouth or your backside everytime they see you, so they stop tuning in to your shows and movies. Sad but true.

^ Which is why I find what he's done admirable. He's not in a "career slump" or looking for a media comeback. He's just starting out a potential mega-career, assuming he still has one, having starred in a blockbuster hit movie that will surely lead to sequels.
I can't think of any other leading actor in Hollywood that has picked this moment in their professional career to come out.
Niel Patrick Harris was already riding high, hardly just beginning, having had a two-decade-old career before he went public. People "knew" him. Many had grown up watching him.

Mr. Quinto's tweet from last night:
"i have spent the day in awe of this outpouring of support and resonance. we. are. in. this. together. NEVER FORGET! i am deeply moved."
I don't agree with the description of him as "pretentous" or "aloof". I find him engaged, intelligent, thoughtful, and interested. He seems to be a little uncomfortable talking about trivialities, but I hardly find that an argument for dismissal.

On a related note he has co-produced and co-stars in a new movie called Margin Call.
He and his film were the front page story on the weekend section of the WSJ last Friday.

That pic of Cooper on the bike looks photo shopped. His tires appear to be "in" the pavement.

For all those who poo-poo Quinto and other public figures for coming out, this is an extreme example that the more public figures that come out, the more it inspires other public figures to come out. And the more out public figures we have, the easier it will be for gay people everywhere to find acceptance

Was there ever a question? It's like with Sean Hayes. It was almost as if he wanted it to be earth shattering when everyone knew it wasn't just him being an amazing actor on Will & Grace.
I figured this was the case with Zachary when I first saw him on 24.
