And - call me crazy, but she surprised us (most of us) as Rose - what about Ms. Peters?
Oh, good point. What I saw was a reading of AUNTIE MAME. Didn't think of the songs!
I know she did the remake of Gypsy, but what the hell... let Bette Midler do it. She's more or less in the right age group, she's got the comedy thing down, she's got the right personality and attitude for it, and she can sing.
CHRISTINE BARANSKI, YOU FOOLS!!!!!!!!
Christine "One Role" Baranski. And the one role is not MAME.
Yes, with Stockard as Vera and Swoozie as Sally Kato and who for "Little Glory"?
Rath, I am going to hunt you down.
You think Freddy is any match for Bernie? Bring it on!!!
Well at least Freddy could bring some depth to GYPSY.
OH NO YOU DI-N'T!!!!!!!!
Oh.
But I did.

Wasn't it in CHER's arena a while? She's the right age, and outrageous, and would certainly add the glamour. I think her vocals would be fine, too. But Burnette would be more Ball.
Truth be told, though Lansbury was chic and warm and it changed her career, the definitive comedic take on the character will always be Russell's. Perhaps only Charles Busch comes close to the Russell brand of elegant humor. It's never been as funny without her (and neither has WONDERFUL TOWN, for that matter.)
GOOD Point Auuggie!
You are right. MAME transformed Lansbury from a bitchy Hollywood character actress to a warm and friendly Broadway singer.
One of the very few instances where an artist was actually able to "re-invent" their on-stage image and the audience did not balk.
After LUCY, Lucille Ball tried to "re-invent" herself (STONE PILLOW) but the public didn't agree.
I just thought of another good example of an artist "re-inventing himself."
After years of playing "heavies" (mostly in Westerns); Robert Preston turned himself into a charming singer-dancer in THE MUSIC MAN and was no longer thought of as a "heavy."
If they are willing to go that young with the part, they should give it to Megan Mullally.

I know there's been discussion on the board about the revival...I think Christine Ebersole would be perfect for the revival as well as the TV movie. She has the class, elegance, and age to do it perfectly.
Except she's not a major ticket seller.

Christine Ebersole seems right for Mame, but she didn't get great reviews when she played the role at Papermill.
While CZJ isn't the warmest performer, I do think she has the right movie star glamour for the role. And I think she is the right age. Auntie Mame isn't 50-60 in the novel, well not for most of it.
i think zeta-jones would play mame very well! i can so see it.
Well, while I love CZJ.......I do think she is a tad too young. With comedy, I think she can do it. Some parts in MARSK OF ZORRO she was funny in "He was vigorous father. Very vigorous." I was cracking up at that part. But, yeah. They need to put someone older in the part.
