this had better be some kind of mistake

I just rented Phantom of the Opera from my local video store, popped it in my DVD player, watched it with a couple of friends, enjoyed ridiculing much of it,and realized that, at least on my copy, there are no special features.
This is not right. What the hell were they thinking? Please tell me that it's not the movie, it's the video store's fault and that they just lost the special features disk. Special features are the best part. Please tell me that they are on there, somewhere....I'm just missing them.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 12:25amThere are two versions of the film. One is a single disc edition with no features except a trailer, and the other is a two disc edition that has a lot of extra features.

That's what you get for ridiculing it.
The film is terribly underappreciated, in my opinion, and time will prove that fact.
In the meantime, I'm lovin' it, and appreciating its film accomplishments even more. Intelligently filmed.
While we're on the topic, I sense that Hollywood went out of its way to ignore it, out of envy and spite. It was not a "Hollywood" production created and controlled by the usual Hollywood moguls. They don't like that. They don't like big-budget films to be "independent."
Bravo Lloyd Webber and Schumacher!

Thank You, Elphaba. My thoughts exactly.
Why are "freaking out" if you rented it to ridicule it?

I just brought the 2 disc special edition for the Special Features. Especially that "Behind The Mask" feature that chronicles the evolution of the show.
There are some good sequences in the film. Three come to mind: The opening, "All I Ask of You" and "Point of No Return". The movie as a whole lacks something, though. JMO.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 12:30pmI managed to purchase a "Special Edition" DVD that only had the one CD in the case, but it DOES have all of the Extra Features. So I guess they have several versions out.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 3:51pmAlthough I think there are some major flaws with the movie (i.e. Gerard), there is something about it that makes me love it. I never buy dvd's but I have actually already bought this one. The special features are great.

This is what makes horse races. I view Gerard Butler as a brilliant casting move. Butler makes a lot of sense to me, and is not at all a "flaw."
The Phantom's masculine sexuality is the undercurrent that pulls Christine toward him. Casting someone like Butler makes it easier to see Christine's self-struggle--her sexual desires represented by her attraction to the Phantom against her desire for romantic love represented by Raoul. Casting Wilson as Raul was also brilliant, in my opinion. Wilson and Butler make tangible Christine's dilemma. Even the differing timbres of their voices supports their differences. Unabashed animal sexuality versus the romantic and lyrical.

I agree that casting Gerard was a good choice ACTING-wise, but the man's singing isn't the best. I loved how he played Phantom, with so much sexual intrigue to pull Christine in.
I loved the film - I thought it was absolutely gorgeous. I found a few problems with it, but overall, I was really impressed.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 5:09pmMaybe it was just an average movie and 'Hollywood' decided to focus on better movies. It's not like Andrew can say it wasn't marketed or produced properly, given that he had pretty much complete control over both those things.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 8:36pmI think what made the stage show a hit is that you are watching it LIVE. It's still an amazing show. But, when my partner and I watched the movie (He LOVED the stage version) he said, it seemed to be lacking the magic that happens, only in live theatre.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 9:31pmI didn't find Gerard Butler sexy at all. I don't know what movie Jose was watching.

Posted: 5/8/05 at 10:11pmI think Gerard Butler was hot as The Phantom. He just oozed pure sex appeal and that dirty/wrong/naughty essence that you shouldn't be attracted to, but are. MMMMM! GOD! Let me just go and watch this movie again...
