I don’t think eligibility should answer to marketing decisions. Distinctions of revival or new work really only matter for awards, anyway. I, personally, think adding some variation of “a new musical” to marketing is generally pointless- I’m not sure it’s any more helpful to ticketbuyers than just indicating it’s a musical.

"It IS impressive how there is, to date, but one jukebox show and it has already closed. Have we turned a corner?"
I agree 100% and hope we have turned a corner. Not every pop star needs a Broadway musical about their life. Let's hope some of these musicals are very successful and the trend continues.
Right. But has a show ever advertised as a new musical only to be considered a revival? I don’t see them suddenly flip flopping here because the people involved have enough power and it’s not like the show was some giant off Broadway hit. I think it could still be new. But there’s a lack of revivals planned so maybe that could help it? But I think the show being a hit and winning best new musical and then them replacing the stars with others stars and keeping it going could be the aim too.
Oh I don't think it's a corner turned - simply a coincidence.
We know there are numerous jukebox/catalogue/bio musicals in development. As long as there are rightsholders with catalogues to exploit, there will be jukebox shows.
Just like as long as there are existing stage properties, there will be revivals. Some seasons we get two (2019), some seasons we get five+.

I think the Huey Lewis musical is also scheduled to open in the spring.
Are Suffs and Lempicka both really going to make it this season? I feel like we’ve been assured of their arrival before so worry about counting chickens, etc., etc.

Suffs has theatre locked in, they can't announce yet...waiting for show in the theatre to post closing notice.
Isn't it an AMAZING season.......I cannot remember anything like this......

I heard rumors about Maybe Happy Ending also coming in this season? Any truth to that?

Im going to revive Newsies in 10 years, advertise it as a new musical so that I have a 99.9% chance of winning best musical!

Isn't there a dearth of musical revivals this season? It would be to Guttenberg 's advantage to be placed there if only for an easier Tony win...

That would be kinda stupid -- seeing that NEWSIES has a previous Broadway run. GUTTENBERG is a new musical -- no questions about it.

It was reported earlier this week that Lempicka is set to begin Broadway rehearsals in January with performances beginning in March.
I am a little curious about the categorization of Gutenberg! as well. Of course it's been performed for about a decade and a half, but if the book or score had been revised for Broadway I could see it being fudged into Musical. Of course, the final decision sits with the Tony folks.

I was under the impression that the issue of licensing was determinative in these cases; if a show has been licensed and widely performed it is not deemed to be new and eligible for Best Musical. Is that not or no longer the case?
It is totally up to the Tony committee and seeing as they’re already being advertised as a new musical I think it will be categorized as such. And the Broadway run will only help it’s licensing.

You’ve said this four times now
I would lean towards putting it into the revival category. But, having seen it today one thing that definitely tips the scale towards new is that it has been updated. There a bunch of jokes in the opening about being at the James Earl Jones theatre (in the context of the show, they've rented it out for a night) as well as updated 2023 references and some other minor changes.

It's definitely less full than New Musical but Merrily, Cabaret, The Wiz & Spamalot are nothing to sneeze at. Plus rumors of several others that could still come to fruition.

Yeah, it's a fairly standard amount of revivals announced thus far.

Tommy and Evita feel like the most likely additions to the Revival category. I don't see a world they get Light in the Piazza in this season (or at all, there wasn't any heat on it at Encores).

Best Actor in a Musical is going to be a bloodbath this year. Rannells, Gad, Radcliffe, Iglehart, Bart, D'Arcy James, presumably Redmayne - and they're just the established stars! There's also the casts of The Outsiders, Water for Elephants, The Notebook, Harmony, and How to Dance in Ohio to consider. Not to mention the possibilities of transfers - if Tommy indeed comes to town Ali Louis Bourzgui could be a contender, too, and Iglehart potentially has a second show with A Wonderful World
Wowzers.

Now it's 12 - The Heart of Rock & Roll is opening this season

I haven't kept up with the discussion but isn't Crazy For You a strong possibility too?

Actually it's 13. The OP was referring to new shows with original scores so did not include Once Upon A One More Time, a jukebox show. So the 11 shows with original scores plus the two jukebox shows makes 13 new musicals this season...so far.
