I agree with JBroadway, especially on the DEH front! I'm completely shocked and disappointed that Ben didn't get nominated. If that's not a tour de force performance, I don't know what is. He leaves his whole heart and soul on that stage. The whole show is so beautiful, so it's really too bad it didn't get Outstanding Musical. At least Rachel Bay Jones got a nom! :)

Lol. Now we're already calling next season's winners?
I'm delighted at School of Rock's noms. I hope they do well with Tony noms.

Have you seen Dear Evan Hansen? Then don't laugh.

Is it at all conceivable to say Audra will not get nominated in the lead actress category on Tuesday?
For what it's worth, my opinion is that if she were any other actress in the role, we wouldn't even be having this discussion as she would clearly be left out.

I wouldn't be surprised of Audra is left out this season.

It is INSANE to me that Ben Platt didn't get a nomination. Zachary Levi was charming, but seriously?? Platt was just phenomenal in Dear Evan Hansen. (So was Rachel Bay Jones, so I'm thrilled she got a nom.)
So happy for for the Bright Star and Spring Awakening love!

This would be the first time since HENRY IV that she opened on Broadway and wasn't nominated for a Tony.

I'm surprised Evan Hansen didn't get more love, too -- but predicting it will win when it hasn't even been announced that it IS going to broadway is a bit premature.
The DD noms don't mean anything? Well, they mean who will get a chance at WINNING a DD. Do they have any effect on the Tony noms? Not too much.

Waitress seems like a definite for best musical now, and School of Rock looks strong. I wonder which of Shuffle/Psycho gets in?

Yes, because "lol" is always meant literally.

Does anyone know why they chose not the include the Best Book category? This may not be the strongest year for books, but jesus that's a really important category.

Haha, I know. But I think that's what neon was referring to when he said "don't laugh." :)

Was Eclipsed eligible last year and not this year? Was Saycon Sengbloh eligible because she was new to the production that opened on broadway? I noticed that Danai Gurira got a special award...
these nominations are all over the place!
Surprised by the poor showing for The Crucible. Hoping it gets tons of Tony love next Tuesday...
My gut feeling is that the Tony committee is going to disagree a great deal with the Drama Desk comittee!

Oops! My bad.
I think Platt has a strong chance, but we don't even know all of what's coming in next season.

I wouldn't count out Bright Star in the best musical category over Psycho. Stronger reviews, as well as a famous creative team.

No, neither of those things. Both productions were this season, and Saycon Sengbloh originated the role Off-Broadway.

Both got mixed-leaning-negative reviews (Bright Star got a rave from the NYTimes but everyone else basically panned it). I can see Bright Star getting in if the Tony's dislike Psycho more than other awards and Shuffle Along gets mixed or negative reviews.

Saycon was not new to the production.
There isn't even a category for book of a musical. How are we supposed to take these awards seriously?

I'm guessing that there was such variance in the voting in that category due to the lack of good books this season that no nominee (or maybe only one or two) got the significant votes on the ballot to make it into the category. They probably just struck it for that reason. Pure speculation though.

I think there are more than enough good books this season.

Dear Evan Hansen's book is fantastic! If no one else, they should have just given them the award!

I haven't seen Dear Evan Hansen yet, but I can't think of a single book of a Broadway musical this season that I think is super solid. I was pretty appalled at the books of Waitress, School of Rock, American Psycho, Tuck Everlasting, and Disaster honestly. The best book of the season for me was First Daughter Suite.
