''To be fair though that Tony Award season was weaker than usual given how a number of musicals had not officially opened yet when the pandemic shut Broadway down in March 2020. Moulin Rouge's competition that season were only: Jagged Little Pill, Tina, and Lightning Thief.''

Had it not been for the COVID hiatus, I still think ''Moulin Rouge!'' also would've won Best Musical over ''Girl From the North Country,'' as well as ''Mrs. Doubtfire,'' ''Six'' and ''Flying Over Sunset.'' I know it has its detractors, but box-office wise, ''Moulin Rouge!'' had been quite a crowd-pleaser before its 10 Tony Award wins.

I absolutely adored Back to the Future. Is the music good, no. Is it one of the most fun nights I’ve ever had at the theatre, yes. Can easily see this at the Broadway/Lunt/Palace.

I too think “Moulin Rouge!” would have won many Tonys if the season was completed. Tveit and Orchestrations not, but all the rest, especially the tech ones, were much likely a given

Jason Manford was OK -  The jokes about ALW and the Royal Albert Hall amused me, and he did a good job setting a positive tone, but we're all sick of Slapgate jokes by now - esp. as we will probably be hearing them for months and even years to come (There are only so many ways you can riff off Will Smith shouting "Get My Wife's Name Out Of Your [Chuffing] Mouth!"...). After the opening monologue, Manford mostly stayed out of things, with none of the excruciating "skits" used by other hosts. Instead, we managed to get ELEVEN solid performances during the show, all of which made it into ITV's two-hour highlights package...

I wonder if the poor scheduling for the Oliviers is a blessing in disguise, as the show does not have to worry about ratings in the same way as other awards shows...

I was thinking the same. She has a strong British accent now??  What a chameleon!

I don't recall which one (perhaps someone else here will), but Settle's accent was discussed in another thread.

JLP is a show that makes you THINK/FEEL, MR is totally VISUAL- of course it won the Tony, people just needed an escape from COVID reality- I totally get it!

JLP didn’t really make you THINK so much as it did flash the virtue signaling directly into your eyes and ears like a set of super bright LED headlights that blinded you to what was otherwise a really crappy book constructed from after school specials.

Being that a good deal of the money behind it are NYC/Broadway people, I think a transfer is basically guaranteed now. Not that an Olivier win means success (hello, Groundhog). But they will want to at least try to make a play at Broadway.

Jordan Catalano said: "Here’s my take on “Moulin Rouge”, which could just all be in my head but makes sense to me.

The two leads are so ridiculously miscast (him ESPECIALLY) that people leave the show more focused on how awful he was and the zero chemistry between them and that just overshadows so much of what’s actually good in the show. When something as major as the leading performances stink, that’s all of what people remember.
"

Exactly THIS! It goes to show you how important casting really is! I'm still flummoxed Alex Timbers was involved or even signed off on these two!

The "Cabaret" performance intrigued me. Did anyone else notice she sounded very much like Emma Stone?
