I can definitely see a successful narrative for Goddess. Especially in a less crowded season where it has more breathing room. I found a lot to love in this show, and if it can be refined a bit, I think it will truly be something special.
I should note that multiple people have confided in me that it has been harder than ever to secure funding for new musicals. This is the main reason why so few announcements have been made. The usual investor pool seems to be in a period of "pulling back" on their spending. The past few years, we've seen around 13-15 new musicals premiere in a given season, but I'm predicting it will be much lighter this year. We will be lucky if we get to the 9 productions required to expand the Tony category to 5 nominees.

Why are we not seeing more revival announcements or short-run announcements then?
It looks like the fall is going to be very light, in terms of any new productions. Wouldn't safe/sure-fire shows be better than empty theaters?

Oh I’m sure more is coming. Maybe Annie Baker’s beautiful play Infinite Life will come in. Or Bruce Norris’ Downstate. Or a Tracy Letts play.

It has absolutely already achieved a very respectable run and clearly exceeded most of our expectations, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will be a hit, in the usual sense of making money for its investors. I don't think it has announced recoupment, and its recent grosses haven't been as high as they were.

BroadwayFlash told us it would be a hit. You, CrustyBagel, have done no such thing...
Crusty Bagel said: "No, no intern here, I just deal in the facts. Something you have a hard time with, we know. I told you great Gatsby would be a hit and it was. I knew it was based on how quickly it sold out at paper mill, and from looking at the pamphlet display at the port authority andin that little park across Lincoln center, and how the pamphlets for great Gatsby were running low whereas the ones for lempicka and heart of rock and roll were all full. There’s other hit indicators that I follow, but I won’t share any more of my secrets. And now I am telling you, WANTED and BULL DURHAM will be coming in hot from paper mill to battle it out for best musical 2026, it will be quite something"
YOU didn't tell anyone this would be a hit because you just joined last month. Unless you're reinventing yourself as a former troll on these boards.
It’s BroadwayFlash, back for the second time in about as many months. They’re not trying to hide it. Just block em.

I know. Just wish they'd admit to it at this point.

Well, the budgets are so high and recoupment rates so bad, who could blame them?
Another problem is so many people have been burned by investing at the Enhancement stage prior to an out-of-town tryout...better terms for investing early aren't worth it if the show never moves to Broadway and there isn't any income stream to take part in!
Another problem is that a lot of the "usual suspects" of Broadway investing and co-producing aren't increasing their investments/raises proportional to budgets. So people who once raised $250K of a $10 million show are still mostly raising $250K –– but now the budget is $20 million.
The tax credit going away is salt in the wound.

That’s why Scott Rudin is here to save the day. Cottonfield by Bruce Norris, directed by Robert Ohara is also coming to Broadway this fall. Montauk by David Hare is coming in the spring.
not Rudin, but isn’t Giant also coming in? What happened to The Motive and the Cue? That revival of fiddler on the roof that was popular in uk?

Hmmmm... don't be so sure. Without that tax credit, he may not be bringing in all these shows...

Does anyone know anything about the new musical Huzzah coming to the Old Globe? The storyline sounds fun and has a great writing team.
A Wrinkle In Time has its sights set on Broadway, but it needs work and probably another out of town run.

all depends on how much Barry Diller is willing to lose on Scott’s vanity projects. They’re all massive financial flops on paper.

Anyone know the state of The Preacher's Wife? I saw it several times in Atlanta and loved it. That show could've immediately transferred imo.
Millions was a ROUGH viewing experience and I can't imagine it transferring anytime soon. It needs huge changes in just about every area except set design. In its current state it will get savaged by critics.

I think --
Goddess - The producers are bringing in Schmigadoon and will do Goddess next season.
Garden - Doesn't have a theater
Preachers Wife - Doesn't have a theater
Millions - Still in the creative process
Galileo - Baffling but Shubert is going to take care of Jordon Roth.
Sinatra - Looks like it will go to London first.
Hippest Trip - Doesn't have a theater. Could be great in Marquis.
Dolly Parton - Major retooling. ATG producing. Will come in next season.
Purple Rain - Has a Shubert theater but has not started it's out of town yet.
Think there are two or three other musicals that may have a path in this season. Heart, Pussycat and Bull Durham.
Goddess is dead for now. It may try London for a reboot from its bland production at The Public. New director likely for revised version and book (and some music) overhaul.
Preachers Wife is too expensive to produce in its Alliance production (another Arden overproduced, no return, $$ sucker they're now known for). Lead producers, and some audiences', found it luke warm. May end up off-Broadway in a small cast reduced version.
Purple Rain is TBD still. Producers are not certain of the director's ability and it may land in new hands post initial run despite stronger book.
Gatsby has new legs with David Cromer now at the helm, with previous director fired, and a London production scheduled.
Benjamin Button will come to the US in a spring production this year or next. Its done excellent UK business and they want superb timing for maximum US success.
Evita is transferring. A few theaters are being set aside for possibility. Now it's just timing.

Hearing the same on Goddess and Preachers Wife. Hearing Purple Rain is a really bad book - movie is not great source material. Button did not sell well over there...at all. They are nervous it will be too expensive and still not sell here. Evita should come in and will next season.

Arden needs to hire a producer to just keep his budgets in line...he over builds sets and kills his shows financially...watch Lost Boys budget explode. He is a really brilliant director and great with actors he just needs to learn how to design shows that work for the scope of the creative and the budget!

If you are right Shubert will have 2 new musicals out of 13 theaters they are booking shows into this season? Two Strangers and Galileo - and Galileo is going to have a hard time raising money - not a show investors are excited about - look for FOB producers to write the big checks...like Lempicka and How to Dance. Only 5 new musicals this season potentially? Get ready for a lot of plays.

This feels like a situation where Saheem Ali is inextricable from GODDESS. He conceived the show, he rewrote the book, and he's been its driving force for the better part of a decade.
I thought the show had potential at the Public in its general idea, score, and design, and I even thought it might be something that the general public could be interested in as an accessible, Disney-like take on mythology. But it needed book work and was probably never going to become a long-running sensation.
