The best part is that Nicole introduced the category right beforehand

I hadn't realized they changed the rules again and more than 4 primary vocalists can be nominated. Which is great for some shows...but kind of iffy for others.

I think GYPSY only got in because it’s competition was somehow ineligible in one way or another.
If I was a betting man, I would assuming that maybe the SUNSET orchestrations were ruled too similar to the 1995 OBC, which was nominated, and may have made them ineligible since the source material was not meaningfully different other than recording live and with new vocalists.
I would’ve loved MINCEMEAT, but they would’ve been eligible last year. Not sure what the DEAD OUTLAW situation was, but I have a feeling it had something to do with the fact that it was released both as a cast recording and as an Audible “book”.

Sunset was eligible and ran a FYC campaign. I suspect because it was a live recording, the audiophiles and techies at the academy overlooked it in favor of studio work.

No "Floyd Collins"? I loved the sound engineering on that recording.

According to Billboard, Gypsy is "the first show to spawn five nominated albums in this category," setting a Grammy record.
"The album from the original production starring Ethel Merman won in 1960, a revival starring Tyne Daly was nominated in 1991, a revival starring Bernadette Peters won in 2004 and a revival starring Patti LuPone was nominated in 2009....West Side Story, Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street [have] four nominated albums each."

Whenever I see this category I always want justice for off-broadway recordings. Three Houses deserves to be on this list. And I agree with Floyd Collins as well

Is eligibility determined before campaigns/nominations? I feel like running an FYC campaign doesn’t necessarily mean they are eligible

There's a cut off date for eligibility, and I doubt producers would spend the money to run an FYC campaign unless they knew they were eligible.

The Grammys are extremely cut and dry on eligibility. Anything released between the August 2024 and August 2025 cut off dates was eligible and yes they would've known of their eligibility before wasting money on a campaign. And if they felt they had not properly been informed of their ineligibility we would be hearing about it now.
The musical theatre Grammy is one of the hardest categories to predict. They don't really seem to have any preferences. Especially in recent years.

This is true yet these five in this lineup announced today were the five most likely suspects.

Both SUNSET and DEAD OUTLAW deserve to be in there instead of DEATH BECOMES HER, BVSC and especially GYPSY.

We'd dump GYPSY. And replace with FLOYD COLLINS. Then this would be right.
Thinking BVSC will win. If not, JIT.
