ALW- reworking a new Cinderella for the stage

I would say it's different than his Wizard of Oz revisal in that he's not writing new songs to supplement an existing score. It sounds like they are creating an entirely new show. This is a story that people will continue to come back to when looking for a new project. Just look at how many versions have actually been created for the stage (musicals, plays, operas, ballets), and both the big and small screen (from straight forward adaptations to versions inspired by the tale and everything in between).

Another new version of ‘Cinderella’ could be interesting if it does something new and innovative with the material. I am somewhat sceptical about Lloyd Webber’s presence given his famously inconsistent record (‘Starlight Express’ borrowed heavily from Cinderella and was a total trainwreck, although ’Evita’,’Joseph’ and even ‘Cats’ have taken tropes from the ‘Cinderella’ story and used them more effectively) but ‘Cinderella’ is a very versatile tale, and there are plenty of ways to make a modern day retelling interesting...

I love Cinderella too but I would welcome ALW's version over Ever After

The article stated that it wouldn't be a traditional fairy tale kingdom, but it wouldn't be something modern like Los Angeles 2023, so it literally could be set anywhere and any time.

Exactly. Beneath all the Rollerskate races and gaudy 80's excess, Starlight Express was basically a gender-flipped version of the classic fairytale - Rusty was Cinderella, Electra and Greaseball were the Ugly Sisters, the Starlight was the Fairy Godmother. It's still an incredibly stupid musical, but this simple child-friendly story-line played a key part in its success in the UK and Germany.

However, there is more than enough room for multiple interpretations of Cinderella...

It's true that we have Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, but that one was written for television, not the stage, so it's hardly a full show, and it doesn't have music like Andrew Lloyd Webber's.

Cinderella is my favorite story ever, but I only really like it when it's set in the past. You know, a "fairy tale" time. So I hope they don't set it in too modern a place. Also, the magic is my favorite part of the story, so I don't know what to think when they say it will be taken away from a "world of magic and fairy godmothers".

But I still have hope because he said, "Every piece of the story is followed". This could really turn out good, because I still love the basic story so much, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is usually brilliantly gorgeous. Call me hopefully excited.

Right. It has Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Hasn't he already done this?? It was called Starlight Express.

Honestly, this is a rehash of a rehash. ALW used to claim up and down in interviews that Starlight Express was his "modern Cinderella tale" and we see how that turned out. I find it amusing he would return to the same idea - and one that's been rehashed to death by everyone - to try for something better this time. I wish he'd try something different... maybe "Aspects of Love 2: Giulietta's Revenge"!
