Yes, a show that has touched hearts and audiences around the world for 50 years and is so beloved that it's had multiple movies is "a slog and a bore".

Sadly, it became a kiddie show and quite a slog midway into the 80s after the 1982 film was released but when ANNIE first opened on Broadway in April 1977, it was a different show which is why it became such a huge enormous hit at the level of HAMILTON and Mel Brooks’ THE PRODUCERS. There’s a reason why it swept the Tony Awards including a Best Musical win.
The child actors were just a part of the show and weren’t the main draw - it was the adults, most notably Tony Award winner Dorothy Loudon’s next level Miss Hannigan. That alone was a show in itself. The lavish set design with the treadmill being used extensively brought the full scale sets onto the stage so they glided on cinematically. Even the opening orphanage set change with the water pipe poles and the back wall with the windows floating up into the rafters while the beds and the room glided off was breathtaking.
I was fortunate to have seen ANNIE countless times during it’s original run on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre) and that ANNIE production I still hold as one of my favorite shows. It saddens me to see what it’s become and agree, it’s now a slog as every attempt to reinvigorate it seems to fail as they all now pull full focus on the children in the show which the original didn’t. Here’s hoping Sam Pinkelton redirects the focus onto the adults the way the legendary Mike Nichols had Martin Charnin do back when he chose to produce the show for Broadway after seeing it in its early stages at the Goodspeed Opera House in the summer of 1976.

I wouldn’t want to see Jinxk in this but I do wonder what the term overexposure even means in the modern landscape. Overexposed to who? How many people on the street can identify her well enough to be thinking “god, she’s in too much!”

I think Jinkx as Hannigan is not overexposure. She’s probably just being RuPaul as the hardest working queen in show business and is building a solid Broadway and West End career for someone whose major claim to fame was winning RuPaul’s Drag Race. Sure, PIRATES might not have been her magnum opus, but her multiple runs in Chicago and Oh, Mary, as well as acclaimed turns in Little Shop and End of the Rainbow on the West End. She’s not a one-hit wonder stunt.
Jean Smart was a fun idea, but she spoke about the toll 8 shows a week took on her during CALL ME IZZY, so a big splashy musical is probably not in the cards. Whoever suggested Meg Stalter (even if it was just part of the HACKS motif), I never want her near a Broadway stage again. Out of 50 trips to Oh, Mary, she is only the second time I left the show unsatisfied
Bridget Everett would be a HOOT, but I can’t see her working around children since she is such a patently adult performer. Add a little boob-ography during Easy Street.

I don't think being over-exposed has anything to do with being a one-hit wonder. It just means being in the public eye so unceasingly that audiences get tired of them.

Regarding Rogers, it's my impression that she's elevated everything she's been in, although I can only personally speak for Boop and (especially) The Wild Party.
Regarding Fisher, I like him a lot, but I have to admit he's sometimes bitten off a bit more than he can chew.
