I love this show but have to agree that it just doesn't work in the context of a 2017 America. Even as a period piece, it just wouldn't be able to evoke nearly the same feelings from its audience that the OBC was able to. I was thinking about it the other day, and I'm sure people will have their own vision etc. to revive it, but a production based in today's Bombay would work so goddamn well. The issues raised in the musical are the exact same ones a 2017 30 something Bobby living in India would face. The peer pressure, the confusion, etc.
I guess Barrington doesn't cast/use understudies?

Based on the clips it looks like the production is a little over directed, with Amy doing pratfalls and Joanne screaming to the rafters. The material is strong enough that is doesn't need this presentational approach.

The clips look horrendous. And Marta's costume is so busy that is the only thing you look at when she is onstage. Ellen Harvey seems totally wrong for JoAnne. Summer stock all the way.
The clips don't do it justice. It was terrific and a lot of the ladies eclipsed Aaron--who was great though.
Aaron doing weird things during Being Alive, did you mean that he sang the song with tears streaming down his face and snot running out of his nose? I agree that the clips for the montage were poorly chosen and do not properly depict the show, which I thought was wonderful.

OMG that clip...painful to watch...Marta's really bad and Aaron seems wrong for Bobby.
I thought Tveit's voice sounded wonderful in those clips, but everything else looks pretty horrible.
Be thankful you are just watching clips and not sitting through the actual production. I will say no more, except that while in Pittsfield I went on a tour of Herman Melville's house and that was quite the unexpected delight.
I agree with Gink. I enjoyed watching this production two weeks ago and these clips don't do it justice. Marta and Joanne were really good (in addition to Bobby).

Wish we had had time to see the Melville house as well. This was the first time I'd seen the show live--I had only watched the rebroadcast of the revival where the actors where playing instruments, but my daughter and I thought this was a great production and wouldn't have been disappointed if we had seen it on Broadway--or perhaps Off. We thought the ladies were stellar and the talk in the very long bathroom line during intermission echoed our feelings.
Art is subjective, (I sat next to a gal during The Play that goes Wrong and she barely cracked a smile).but we were very glad we drove up to see it.

Is Aaron leaving the production? I heard another actor is cramming to learn the role in 5 days.

One of my SO's friends tweeted that they had just auditioned to replace their husband in a show for the first time, and the husband happens to be in Company right now. It's possible they could be having him take over if Aaron can't extend his contract to match the show's extension.
It would be the second time he has to leave a Sondeim show due to schedule conflicts
Joseph Spieldenner, who plays Paul, is starring as Billy Bigelow in Carousel at Media Theatre in Pennsylvania. Rehearsals begin September 4, so I assume he's leaving the show as of this weekend. No idea about Tveit.

I would hope they wouldn't extend the run of the show if Aaron Tveit wasn't able to finish the run. I have tickets to the closing performance on September 10th so I'm hoping he's still there.
Aaron will complete the run. His next project is a film, a detective drama.
I loved Esparza. It was the first time Being Alive made total sense to me.
drove up to see this last week - was totally worth it. We laughed and cried and the songs have been with us all week. Lauren Marcus was fabulous, a shining star. Aaron Tveit was great, my 2 teens LOVED him. I was really impressed with him after the show - he came outside to sign autographs and take pictures in torrential rains, what a gentleman. Have to mention Mara Davi as April, was perfect. Also a sweetheart to come outside in the pouring rain and chat with fans.
I was also there on the night it rained so hard, the 22nd, and again the following night. At both performances, I sat next to the audience member who caught the football Aaron throws into the audience during Side by Side by Side. Glad to see there are more positive comments than negative here from those who have seen the production.

You have to be kidding. Company is so New York City, as much as On The Town or Guys and Dolls. The show will work best as a period place, although the book needs to be thrown out (it was terrible when the show opened). Are they going to re-orchestrate the score to give it a Bollywood sound?

Not even a little bit kidding. "Another Hundred People" fits Bombay like a glove. The stereotypical couples in the show can be transferred to Indian metropolitan city couples of today as they are. The intentions driving their insecurities will be different from what American couples face, but it won't require a lot of text to be revised. And I'm not sure what you think "Bollywood" sound is, but it's not Bombay Dreams. Bollywood music has always been a melting pot (I use the phrase unironically). It has always been inspired by all sorts of genres, and musically speaking - has always been theatrical. If you look at last 10 years worth of music alone, I can pick a 100 songs which, with the exception of language, could be on US radio right now - orchestrations intact.
Edit: *bollywood music is not just Bombay Dreams. I didn't mean to diss that sound, it's just that it doesn't make even 20% of the what Bollywood music has to offer.

Zachary Prince will be stepping in for Paul on September 6 through closing. He has the face and voice of an angel, so I'm sure he'll be great.

I was there last night, and the show is wonderful. Every actor is cast perfectly, and it totally works in 2017. It is timeless. Aaron was an incredible Bobby. He gave an emotional, nuanced, and brilliant performance. His "Being Alive" was sensational, and he sung beautifully through his tears.
Highly recommended. And as I passed the stage door area, I heard him be so kind to fans, what a stand up guy. Man, I wish he would come back to Broadway,
