There is no world in which a Sutton Foster Gypsy will ever be on Broadway now. By the time it’s ready to revive, which will be a long time after the Audra Gypsy - if ever - Sutton will be aged out. Her voice already is experiencing mild decline.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Time to put down the bottle, binau. Glad that you love her, but "one of the greatest Broadway performers of all time" is, frankly, insane. A cross between Judy Garland and Whitney Houston? Wild. Also, to assert that someone must be jealous of her to have not enjoyed her performance is ridiculous."

100% ridiculous and deeeeeply hilarious. Lolz.

binau said: "Super exciting time for her. At the final performance I ‘heard’ how much excitement in the delivery and reaction to “I’ll be back” where she was ‘Born to be’ was. Maybe she will explore other projects first, but I would not be shocked to see her back in a Kiss of the Spider Woman revival in a few years.

I continue to laugh at her ‘haters’. Nicole literally proved she is one of the greatest Broadway performers of all time in this one role. She runs circles around most Broadway veterans with her talent and star presence. She beat Audra in Gypsy for gods sake. To me it seems embarrassingly petty and ridden in jealousyand mediocrity for someone to just dismiss her achievements or talent.

She is a cross between Judy Garland and WhitneyHouston.

Im not really sure I get the Sutton Foster comparisons. Nicole is currently peaking in her career and has raised the bar with a brand new unique sound on Broadway. Sutton Foster is at a different point career wise, and she never had Nicole’s voice anyway. The only people I would even put in the same category of Nicole in terms of vocal standards and unique timbre are people like Audra, Jennifer H, Cynthia E, Patti,Bernadette in her peak mid 90s etc. this is not child’s play or just ‘another actor’.

Comments like these are the reason the word HYPERBOLE exists.

Sutton will eventually overtake Angela Lansbury with most leading actress in a musical Tony’s. Foster already has two, and will surely win a third for SUTTON GYPSY. Then there’s all the new musicals she’s working on."

SUTTON GYPSY?!?!?! Is that even a thing?!?!?

I believe what I believe. Go and listen to Nicole singing the final ‘with one look’ and ‘as if I never said goodbye’ on YouTube. Almost no one else could do this. The expressive dynamics, the hypnotic slow tempo, a voice that can sound pure and clean and piercing in one moment then switch to this deep, almost husky silky wave of vibrato it’s just breathtaking. It kills me every time just the subtle off beat first note of ‘as if we never said goodbye’. Let alone the rest of the journey of the song that has so many twists and turns. I just don’t think anyone else can really do what Nicole can, not even close. She is her own very unique thing.

I can think of at least 20 NON-FAMOUS people who can do this, let alone countless Broadway veterans. Be so for real.

And learn what a counter opinion is. This is a messageboard, not a diary. If you want to make wild over the top outlandish statements then people are gonna respond to it. Mandy was absolutely great in the role too. So was her Standby, so was her alternate in London. Its not hard for someone to show off in this role in this specific production.

THAT PART. People are wild on these boards lately. If you don't want someone to disagree with you, don't offer an opinion someone can disagree with. But if you post in a public forum, expect discourse.

Except you’re a clown who has been popping into chats regularly over the last few months only to tell everyone Nicole is overrated and that Audra or Jasmine were more deserving of the Tony win.

Alright, so anyone have an leads on what she's doing next? Has she been in any workshops?

Nicole has said that her Carnegie Hall/Royal Albert concert will include roles she wants to play. She has also said her dream project is writing her own musical. I'll believe that one when I see it, but I definitely think her shift to musical theatre is something she's looking to make permanent (as much as they were obviously intentionally pushing the "coming home" narrative for her Tony campaign, she did actually do a musical theatre BFA program and has, throughout her career, always listed a Tony Award as her fantasy award before anything else).

I'm sure the money for something like The Masked Singer is hard to pass up, but I get the impression she is tired of not being taken seriously as an artist and will probably be a bit choosier with her projects now that she is trying to be taken seriously as an actress.

It sounds like she’s going to make a record.  I’m sure she wants to do music, film, and tv, as well as concerts, and then do theater every now and then if the role is right

As a Nicole fan, would love for this to be true, but I have a hard time believing it. She hasn't released an album in over a decade even though she has teased, like, at least five and I think fully recorded at least one. I'm sure she's got plans to record an album but I won't be holding my breath (get it?). I do know she's had plans for an album of showtunes - that I think COULD happen (though I still won't be getting my hopes up). I'd be pretty surprised if she released any music other than that anyyyyy time soon, lol.

Nicole also definitely wants to do movies very badly and has made no secret of it - I don't think she is that interested in doing more TV based on how she's been talking about her career but that's just a guess LOL. But I honestly get the impression from her recent interviews she is kind of done with her music career.

Those are hardly the only conversations I've taken part in during the last several months. I post quite regularly and have for nearly 20 years. Just because those are the only conversations you pay attention to, that's not my problem. Meanwhile, I challenge you to find a post where I actually said Nicole was overrated or that she was undeserving. I may have said my personal preference was Jasmine, but my comments about Nicole's performance were always about how she was in a very divisive show. But please, do continue to put words in my mouth to support this narrative.

I just want to say, the last couple years of theatre has genuinely been overwhelming. Nicole in sunset, Audra in Gypsy, here we are, Bernadette in old friends, Donmar next to normal etc. I ****ing love this art form and some of the artistry that has been on display recently. Yes I am over the top but I genuinely love and am passionate about all of it. I do genuinely believe what I am saying about Nicole, and maybe that makes me unhinged or naive or whatever I don’t know. I just love it though.

I doubt many here can say their dreams have come true as much as mine have time and time again. It really is overwhelming.
