...as a singer (I haven't seen him act, so I refuse to judge). I bought the new recording of WSS and he is one of my favorite parts of it. I think his voice has so much color and power to it. The unique tones to his voice blend quite nicely with Joesfina's voice. A great portion of people on this board strongly dislike his vocals and I'm not sure why.
He is bland as plain oatmeal as an actor.
Yes.
Shirt on or off?
"He is bland as plain oatmeal as an actor."
While I think he is pretty miscast as Tony, I thought he was quite good in Grey Gardens.
Judging solely by his singing and not his acting... Cavenaugh does have some very strong aspects to his voice and I like his delivery a lot more than many Tonys, but he sings with excessive vibrato. This is strange because I normally like singers with a lot of vibrato, but with him, it kind of hangs off every syllable, like he's singing while swimming through a lake of vibrato. There are also some moments when he sounds unpleasantly nasal. I don't dislike him, but I don't like him either.
EDIT: He's very cute, though.
I love him in everything he's done including West Side Story. Using the Joe Kennedy accent as Tony was an odd choice, but whatever. I still think he sounds great.

"like he's singing while swimming through a lake of vibrato"
I want to swim in a lake like that!
i love him as well...
He can't sing Tony properly but he's a fine performer. Enjoyed his work in Catered Affair and Grey Gardens (and his shirtless ads for Urban Cowboy).

I think he's very good.
... as long as he's not on stage.

I enjoy his voice. I have only seen him in "Dorian" and really enjoyed him. He did a partially nude scene in the show that our theatre critic seemed to focus on but I thought his acting along with his singing was wonderful. I saw the show 3 times.
I've always enjoyed his performances.
I think the character is mainly the problem. I have always seen Tony as a boring character and sort of a wimp.

Ooo! Sexual Dependency. It's a terrible movie, but still worth it for that scene.

He was good in Grey Gardens, he is not good in West Side Story.
I even had a friend and her 12 year old daughter see WSS a week or two ago: they thought he was terrible.
I liked him in GG; but didn't love him. Loathe him in WSS. I'd give him another chance based GG, though.
I do like his singing. I will give him credit for that on the West Side Story cast recording. However, it means nothing when he gives such a lackluster performance acting. It's almost like he's not alive on stage.
I love everything about him!
I liked him in A Catered Affair and at Tales from the Bad Years. But just didn't care for him in WSS
Maybe, if he performed WSS in his tightie whities, he would get better reviews.
And Drunk Chita makes another idiotic comment. You're really blaming Cavenaugh's lackluster performance as Tony on the character? Plenty of actors have made Tony complex, troubled, and interesting.
