"One way to understand the main problem facing "Amazing Grace," the very sincere new musical with Broadway aspirations, is to imagine a version of the Academy Award-winning movie "12 Years a Slave" wherein the protagonist is not Solomon Northup, the free-born American sold into slavery, but the Brad Pitt character, the white abolitionist Samuel Bass. Should such a movie have been made?"
its about John Newton who has slaves, and then realizes that slavery is wrong and then writes the famous song Amazing Grace. It sounds interesting to me, and the b roll looked awesome. Its really a redemption story
ya never know. Based on the things people were saying about An American in Paris before it opened, I was expecting awful reviews. That sure as hell didn't happen
Epic musicals like this, Dr Z & Rebecca (if & when it ever opens) will always get crap reviews. Les Miz did not get raves & overcame them . I doubt Amazing reviews will be Amazing & it will be Amazing if it has any kind of a run
To soothe the fears of one previous poster - she knows of whom I speak - I hope it succeeds no matter what the reviews & wish it luck.

The only one who said anything negative about AAIP was you philly.
I said I enjoyed it but I thought it was overhyped. Liked Rotten more & enjoyed OOT more . This does not constitute a pan. I enjoyed it but not as much as many others.
I would never give a critique of any show without seeing it.
The best this can hope for are politely tepid reviews. Even it does get positive reviews, it's already too deep in a hole financially and in terms of excitement and word-of-mouth to turn itself around. No one wants to see it, no one really cares, and those who have seen it can't muster much enthusiasm.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
That about sums up the situation. It would be lucky to get tepid reviews. I shutter to think of any show ever opening to get reviews as putrid as those Dr Z got.
