As Karen, per the Daily Mail.
Andrea Riseborough, who is in the final stages of negotiations to star with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in the screen version of Tracy Letts’s prize- winning play August: Osage County.
Some of you may have seen the Steppenwolf Theatre production that visited the National Theatre a few seasons back. Meryl plays the pill-popping matriarch of a highly dysfunctional family in Oklahoma.
Julia will play one of Streep’s daughters, while Andrea will play Karen, the youngest girl. What have Meryl and Andrea in common? They have both portrayed Margaret Thatcher on the screen...

I have no idea who she is. But I was hoping Julianne Moore would get that part.
^ Same. Or Cousin Debbie. I still say Mary Louise-Parker, Elisabeth Moss or Sandra Bullock for Ivy. She's my favorite character. Also, Stanley Tucci for Bill.
And then Viola Davis for Violet and Octavia Spencer for Mattie Fae when it's remade with an all black cast on Lifetime in a few years.

I always pictured Marisa Tomei in that part. But i really like the idea of Debra Messing now that you bring it up. I could see Amy Adams playing Ivy, i've always wanted her to play that part.
I haven't, but did anyone see W.E.? She was W.
Even though I've only heard wonderful things about Riseborough (both on stage and on film,) I worry she's going to look very young opposite Roberts and whoever's ultimately cast as Ivy.
In the play, the sisters are very close in age- Karen is 40, Ivy is 44, and Barbara is 46. Roberts is 45 and Riseborough is 31, so even if the actress playing Ivy falls somewhere between them, that's still a pretty huge age gap.
Please, Lord, Mary Louise Parker as Ivy.
Funnily, though, the casting I'm most concerned about is Jean. There are just so many traps they could fall into.
Edit: For a moment after I hit Post I was seized by the terrifying thought that I had put Mary Louise Wilson as Ivy.
I'd love to see Mary-Louise Parker play Ivy, but she's actually three years older than Roberts, so they're going to need to go with someone more distinctly younger. Claire Danes is probably too close in age to Riseborough to play it now, but she was one of the first people I thought of.
Hailee Steinfeld would be an absolutely killer Jean.
Hailee Steinfeld OR Chloe Grace Moretz. They're both 15, a year older than Jean is written in the play, but they both look younger.
Your heading says she joins the film but the first sentence you have says she is in the "final stages of negotiations."

Riseborough may be a bit too young but she's a very good actress and will be solid, I'm sure.
Considering Mary Louise Parker comes across as an ice bitch in every role she plays, I have a hard time understanding why she'd be right for the mousy, sensitive Ivy.

"Winona Ryder as Ivy"
BRILLIANT.

If Mary Louise Parker gets cast in this I propose a drinking game for every time she rolls her eyes.
I think almost all of these names are too pretty for Ivy. I have a hard time believing no man would want her and her only option is Little Charles.
I think Ryder has exactly what it takes to pull off the characters attraction to little Charles and not make anyone think she can "do better".

I did love Andrea Riseborough in that recent remake of "Brighton Rock"..

Jean Smart as Mattie Fae (although they will probably go with a star like Sissy Spacek or Sally Field -- either of whom would be perfect).
Andrea is perfect casting. Absolute perfection. They really got this one right. She won't read too young. I am glad she is getting this highly coveted role. She's an exceptional actress.
I say Kathy Bates for Mattie Fae.
I don't think Elisabeth Moss is "too pretty," not that she isn't pretty...she just isn't pretty in a traditional sense.
But after thinking about Winona Ryder as Ivy, I retire all three of my suggestions. I'm sold. Do it.
Also: Kathy Bates as Mattie Fae. Or else.

I could be wrong but I thought I read that Kathy Bates had already turned the part down (although since her series was cancelled she may reconsider).
Back in May, someone tweeted at Kathy Bates saying they hoped she'd be playing Mattie Fae. She responded:
Kathy Bates @MsKathyBates
@dinasztie13 Sadly no. I heard just before HL. Mr. Wells doesn't think I look like Meryl's sister. :-!
Riseborough certainly looks a lot like Streep, but Roberts doesn't at all, so the logic of only using actors who appear like they could actually be related doesn't really make sense in this case. If Wells is willing to make an exception for a star like Roberts, he should be willing to do the same for a star like Bates. They can't do better than her.
That being said, if Bates is really out of the picture, Margot Martindale would be the next best thing, though I also like the idea of Jean Smart.
I already know that Julia Roberts screaming "Eat the fish, bitch!" will be my ringtone for life.

Yes.....
I'm disappointed about Riseborough's casting, I just expected someone who could highlight Karen's humor. I haven't seen Riseborough being funny, so maybe she'll surprise me.
Mary-Louise Parker or Marisa Tomei would be my ideal choices for Ivy, but I do love the idea of Winona Ryder, that's inspired casting!
I can't believe Wells would deny Kathy Bates the chance to be in this based on looks, Roberts looks nothing like Streep and Bates is so right for this part, it's ridiculous.
