Does having big stars in the audience help ticket sales?
Do you think they pay for housesits or are they free?
Celebrities don’t make public announcements on when they are attending a show so how does this help ticket sales?
And actors do get access to house seats but they do pay for them. There are no “free tickets” even to cast members. I always obtain house seats for shows I know people in AND I pay for them.

Clearly you’ve never heard of publicity, influencers, or endorsements.
And there is certainly such a thing as “comp” tickets so your statement that there are no free tickets is silly.

Yeah, that's wrong. I've seen a ton of shows on Broadway and Off - and even here in LA - all through comp house seats.

Even if some of the stories are exaggerated I've heard box office employees tell stories of Elaine Stritch (and others, but her a few times) just...showing up at a theatre at 7:50pm and basically demand tickets and she'd almost always get them.
Plenty of celebrities get free tickets, plenty of celebrities have agents/assistants arrange paid for house seats. I don't think DEH at this point would be making calls for celebs to come and be seen/photographed but shows marketing teams have for SURE arranged for people to see a show and post about it.
Every show gave Stritch a ticket except Mamma Mia. :)

I think the more likely explanation has to do with our community's websites (BWW.com, Playbill, Broadway.com, etc) creating content regarding these major mainstream stars visiting a show than anything else. There's no coverage in mainstream entertainment-centric outlets about any celebrity's particular theatrical outing, unless it's a President or such.

There are a dozen+ news outlets reporting on Jolie’s outing to see DEH

No, and I don't think many people including me care.
