Oh, I'm so glad to find this thread (and the video)!
A friend of mine and I went to see Adam and Anthony in a show last night! It was sort of cabaret-style...except it wasn't in the round with drinks, it was in a medium-sized theatre (Northlight in Skokie, technically 10 miles north of Chicago). SO much fun! I'm trying to figure out if it was a one-off show or what, since I didn't even know about it til my friend, who lives closer to the theatre, told me about it. They didn't even seem to do, or get, any press for it.
EDIT: Oops, tried to post pics but evidently I didn't do it right. There doesn't seem to be a 'browse' option on here...
That said, plenty of fans came out to hear them do a combination of their own arrangements on some of their favorite Broadway tunes, originals. Anthony also did some cool covers of REM ("Losing My Religion," which he stated was his audition song for "Rent,"), Snow Patrol ("I thought this was cool before it was featured on 'Grey's Anatomy'") and Radiohead's "Creep," which, by golly, I liked better than the original. He talked about losing his mother during the original run of the show, and sang an original and "Without You" for her. Very touching.
Adam actually opened the show, and Anthony came on after an intermission. They each had their own bands. It was interesting to note a bit of a reversal (in perception, anyway); Adam did more original arrangements of Broadway tunes, and Anthony came out in a hoodie and jeans and did more rock stuff. How long has Adam been proficient on a stand-up bass? A tripped-out, red, shortened-on-stilts electric stand-up bass plugged in to an amp, that is. He did cool renditions of "Maria" (WSS) and some Sondheim, and opened his set with "the prettiest song from the worst show I've ever seen," "Memory." And of course, he played some original stuff.
They both told really charming, funny, engaging stories, and it was nice to see them looking like...2 guys in their 40s just playing what they want to play, singing how they wanted to sing, and just rocking out and enjoying themselves.
When Adam said "some of you may know, on Tuesday I'll be joining the cast of 'Memphis,' a) I hadn't known previously and b) I thought, "they're doing this road-trip right before he opens?"
Not sure if anyone lives here and caught it, too. They both closed the show with a bunch of "Rent" tunes, including a rocking "Seasons of Love" that had the crowd on its feet...and even surprised us when we jumped up along with everyone else. A good time. (And yes, they said that Adam is going to be 41 next week and Anthony will be 40 the week after that.)
"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things." "I dare say you haven't had the practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." --Alice in Wonderland
