MusicMan, That comment is not only mean-spirited and unneccesary, it's ill-informed and quite frankly Bullcrap. Unless, that is you are trying to stir up trouble, or joking. I can't imagine anyone who has even a small amount of musical expertise saying something like that. It's rather foolish. So I'm assuming you're doing this on purpose and I'll stop now. Oh, I assure you he means every word of it. I'm kind of wondering if he's going to answer the actually question asked by this thread, or at least write down positive thoughts about it.
My vote for the Best Composer/s ranks in the following order:
#1 - Sylvester Levay
#2 - Andrew Lloyd Webber
#3 - Stephen Sondheim
#4 - Jim Steinman
#5 - Eric Woolfson
.....There are MANY other greats, but those are my top five for now!!!
See Ya!

Obviously, it's Stephen Sondheim... but I'd really like to say William Finn. Yes, I know he hasn't had endless Broadway hits, but he's SO SO SO brilliant.
Gershwin
Rodgers
Bernstein
Webber
Finn
Brown
must everything be turned into a best/worst contest. can't we just enjoy these composers for their individual talents.
1. Leonard Bernstein
2. George Gershwin
3. Andrew Lloyd Webber
4. Stephen Sondheim
5. Cole Porter/John Kander
and for best composer ever in any genre, Puccini, of course
Andrew Lloyd Webber all the way. Just a thought. Who wrote the last 5 years?
JRB wrote L5Y.
We cannot count out Webber, as well as those les mis guys who I won't attempt to spell.
Sondheim, no question.

Well, I've read through the thread twice, and I haven't seen my favorite. So, I'm thrilled to be the only schmuck who appreciates Frederick Loewe.
omg! I COMPLETELY forgot about Loewe! Thanks for the reminder. He replaces Kander/ Bock in my top five. Camelot and My Fair Lady...ah.
Webber and Sondheim. I like Rodger and Hammerstein, but for some reason I always fall asleep when I hear extend play of their music. It's like, "Oh, I love this song ...zzzzzzzzzzzz."
