"Just learned that neither Carol Channing nor Jerry Herman plan on attending the opening of this production."
They are really really old. So I'm not particularly surprised.
Do we think there will be a cast recording? There's no evidence to the contrary and with this cast, I'd think it'd be a slam dunk decision. Wish they'd announce it soon.

isn't it believed that Murphy will be the standby for Midler for the other 7 shows?

Do you know why, Dollypop? I can imagine Miss Channing deciding it is Miss Midler's night and making an appearance would only be a distraction. But I don't know why Jerry Herman would absent himself, except for health. Surely he knew that somebody other than Channing would play the part someday!
Last I heard, they both live out here in California, so maybe travel is difficult at their ages.
Do some of you know why the producers are being tight lipped about this revival? Not even a rehearsal sneak peek and set/costume design concept art was released.
I think they are smart keeping a tight lid on things.it is building suspense and excitement. They are doing a terrific job with their PR campaign at creating this to be a true "event" rather than just another "revival"
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
I don't "low key" is the really right term for what he is doing. They are spending a ton of money on advertising, but like Book of Mormon there can be great power in doing it in such a way to create "intrigue" --when the public has seen nothing before going in to the theatre. Leave em wanting more, they say... and so far it's working.

Since previews start on the 15th, it won't be long until first preview goers give us more details on the show. You're right about Scott Rudin working hard to make this feel like an event, which is absolutely true.

Scott Rudin has to hype this because Bette is getting enormous sums of money for doing this show. The show has to sell out for him to make a buck.

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
