I'm not all that surprised about the P&T numbers. The show is selling decently well in a medium-large house in a time where it was proven just last year that magic is still welcome and wanted on Broadway. The Illusionists, correct me if I'm wrong, nearly sold out their limited engagement and recouped in a very short amount of time. Granted they were very much present during the holiday season... but so was Honeymoon in Vegas and no one was seeing that... not even during New Years Week. I think P&T will make a killing for the remainder of their run.

Are you strictly talking about the grosses or do you mean the quality of the show itself ensures it won't last much longer? Or both? The people who I've talked to who love it REALLY love it. I want to see it for myself but I also don't want to have to rush to see it if it closes a week or two after it opens.

I'm a 70yo[on Friday] male from Australia who thankfully discovered this site not long ago. It allows me, from a great distance, to be a part of a life that I belonged to long ago.
I will never see these shows you talk about so I avidly follow all your comments,opinions,reviews,discussions to help me live through a performance.
I joined here under another name because when I was brave enough to say something I was called names I had no idea what they meant. I crawled back behind my screen but kept reading[and learning].
I became SweetLips and very hesitantly check and recheck before I post now-reborn.
I do not have a lot to contribute and am fascinated when I see that thousands have read a thread and only a handful have said something--why?
My life has been a wonderful adventure, have worn many different 'hats' and have coped with all types of situations but from the tone of so many postings these past few days-the nastiness,anger I feel from the page is unsettling and I felt I wanted to speak out.
The young ones,please love the theatre and respect those older and more experienced--lively discussion moves things forward-rudeness,arrogance and ego is retrograde.

Speaking for myself, I would say both the grosses and the general reports of the quality of the show are indicating that Amazing Grace is doomed.
Every show is going to have fans who REALLY love it, and with the internet it's easier than ever for those fans to be located and given a voice. I personally found the show to be so bland that while I wouldn't call it the worst thing I've ever seen, I'm certainly not recommending it to anybody else, and that seems to be the general consensus of a lot of my circle of friends and acquaintances.
Obviously everyone will respond to a show differently, and you may indeed find yourself loving it. But it would certainly be wise to avoid procrastinating and pick up a ticket soon. It's extremely rare for a show to bounce back from such low numbers as this one has been pulling in, especially when you have more than nine months to even get to the start of awards season and the chance of that kind of exposure.
And before anybody tries to say "well look at Gentleman's Guide, they survived some rough times to push to awards season" look at their historical grosses first. Even during the rough winter months before their Tony win they were still pulling in 40% or more of their gross potential, so while they may have been bleeding money, they weren't hemorrhaging cash in the way that Amazing Grace surely is right now (not to mention that Amazing Grace has about four months more to wait out than Gentleman's Guide did).

The numbers for AG are, as you say, on a different level. In addition, although it is sometimes difficult to distinguish fan enthusiasm from general consensus during previews, there are some markers. There has been a striking lack of enthusiasm for AG from any quarter, and among non-fans, there has been a resounding thud. By contrast, even people who did not love GG (and I count myself as one) seemed to understand its appeal. And honestly, at the time it came along, there were awfully slim pickings unless you like jukebox musicals. AG, by contrast, arrives with lots of the word of mouth being negative as well as unenthusiastic, and in lots of traffic for attention.

@vintagesnarker its a combination of both, as hogan and aea have said above. Im sure there are people who love the show and will latch on to it, every show has its fans. But I just found it to be amateur hour in terms of composition and direction. Just two days later and I struggle to remember any of the original songs b/c they were so nondescript, the actors seem to have been instructed to behave like caricatures, and there is nothing inventive or unique in the staging. Its all stuff we've seen done before, and done better. I don't mean to disparage anyone who enjoyed it, but it was a bit tedious for me.
But: Even if it somehow surprises with strong reviews, the grosses are so insanely low it would take (to use a plot point from the show) a miracle from God to save it. Even if the grosses double after the opening due to good press, they still wont be cracking 50% potential gross. The only way it stays open is if the producers decide they are ok with throwing money away for a few extra weeks.
