Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7

Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:15pmPhantom had that four performance week the week before, with the implementation of its new sound system. So they went from a well attended four performance week to a less well attended eight performance week, which accounts for the drop in percentage and increase in gross.

Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:17pmWhile certain shows may be off more than the norm, last year's drop after Labor Day was an average of 30.76%, this year 30.8% so it isn't earth shattering.

>The shut down was only last week? It feels like it was awhile go, sheesh sometimes time moves too fast, sometimes not fast enough.<
Yup! Phantom was dark for performances on Monday, August 25 through Wednesday, August 27. They played August Thursday, August 28 through Saturday, August 30.

Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:28pmI didn't check the other shows, but Spamalot had easily its worst full week ever. Much worse than the same week last year. No wonder they wanted Clay to come back.

You know, I'm wondering (and by wondering, I mean hoping) that [tos] will pull a Xanadu and fight through the lean weeks to get to next year. I mean, Xanadu definitely has a broader appeal, but I feel like if they wanted to close [title of show] they would have done it a while ago.
I know its a long shot, but a boy can hope can't he?

[tos] had it's moment, but it's undeniably time for it to go.
Shame. Dominique Dawes will never get her big moment.

Spamalot's numbers have been down compared to last year as a rule and last year's post Labor Day drop was 35.8%, this year 40.5%. For the previous week, including Labor Day 2007 the show had a capacity of 92.0%, 2008 82.4% so the numbers for post Labor Day, while bad, aren't really out of line with how the show is doing.
Only time will tell if Clay Aiken is going to help the numbers rebound for the end of 2008 as they did for the beginning.

Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:42pmOh yeah, Spamalot's in big trouble too. Chicago is as well. They're running out of stunt casting.

Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:43pmAll the TDF dates for [title of show] have mysteriously disappeared. That's never a good sign.
#64re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7
Posted: 9/8/08 at 6:51pmCHICAGO is not in trouble at all. What are you talking about? They have grossed more this year than last year's best musical Spring Awakening.

This might be a dumb question, but...
What's the average number of producers one show has?
#66re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7
Posted: 9/8/08 at 7:38pmAnd someone gave an 'uh-oh" about Xanadu, but it had a far less drop then most of the list. And it has never been under 50% in it's history, according to the charts.

It's very hard to give an accurate number. Some shows have just a few producers, but others like Spring Awakening have an army of them.
I think the poor film box office this week was a combination of the hurricane preventing most of the east coast from doing anything Friday night-Saturday. And the fact that the films out right now... um kinda suck.

I can't imagine [tos] will close before the end of this year's NYMF. That wouldn't look very good for the first Festival show that's made it to Broadway (about the Festival itself, even) to close in the middle of this year's fest, particularly with all the post-mortems about how poorly it did that will surely follow. Plus, I'm sure they're hoping that interest in the Festival may boost interest in [tos].
Oddly, it's the festival shows that are much harder tickets than the Broadway show is. Perhaps [tos] could do a promotion where they include a ticket to a hard-to-get NYMF show with every full price [tos] purchase...
I wouldn't expect it to last much longer than this year's NYMF, though.

Get used to it boys & girls. People are getting fed up. Gypsy with Lupone doing so poorly is really shocking - not. Wonder how those higher priced aisle seats are doing now
The cure for these gross grosses . I say keep raising prices ad infinitum. The backlash is affecting sports as well.People are getting disgusted with the flat out greed of having to pay for the privilege of buying their previous free overpriced seats to help pay for the team finaced (ha ha) new stadiums.
#73re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7
Posted: 9/8/08 at 8:39pmAs much as I'd like to see [tos] succeed, I cannot for a second believe that the weekly nut is below the 164k it grossed two weeks ago, let alone the 106k it took in last week.
#74re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7
Posted: 9/8/08 at 8:43pmTheir nut is probably the lowest of any show on Broadway, but there is no way it's that low.

"To the naysayers for [tos], the show is fine. Don't panic yet, believe me. This week is awful for every show, and TOS didn't fall nearly as far as others did, compare the percentages people."
Well, it didn't have very far to fall, considering how poorly it did the week before. Even shows that dropped over 40% did better than [tos]. And if [tos] dropped 40%, it would be doing next to zero. If [tos] only did 32% including TDF, with them not being on TDF, they're going go drop incredibly. No one is buying tickets to this show, especially at full price. They have at most 300 people at each performance (probably all bought at discount). And the Xanadu argument doesn't hold water ... it NEVER did as poorly as [tos] is doing. [tos] is comping like crazy, and can't even give comps away. Everyone who wants to see it has seen it already. And what makes you think it is so cheap to run? Theatre rent, salary for 4 actors, 1 musician, 2 understudies, probably a musician standby, plus all the backstage people, advertising, utilities, etc etc etc. I don't think $106K per week is covering everything. It will be gone very soon. No show can survive on 32% capacity, and its only going to get worse in the coming weeks.
