Someone said on ATC that Sutton is Carrie.
I thought they were joking.

The gym teacher has played by an African American woman in all iterations of this musical. I can't imagine they would change that. God, couldn't they find a talented twenty-year-old anywhere in New York to play Carrie? I thought the days of forty-year-olds playing teens were coming to an end. Was Kerry Butler unavailable?
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

It's just a reading, though, right? Does it really matter how old they are?

Yeah, but it's a reading geared towards the goal of a full production. I'm usually not an age Nazi, but this is one of those cases where I'd rather see someone age-appropriate (at least early twenties). So much of this story rests upon the terrifying mother-daughter dynamic; Mazzie and Foster will look like sisters.

From what I was told, they contacted Dana Steingold for the part of Carrie, but I guess it looks like she didn't get it or didn't want it.

There are several other strong female roles in this show other then Carrie. What about Foster as Chris or Sue?

Laurie Beechman, who did the first reading, was not African American. Darlenen Love is African American, but she was in both Stratford and Bway. It's not exactly a trend, therefore, although her understudy was also AA. What other iterations are there?

Well, there would still be the age issue, not to mention that I think those roles would be too small for her.

If I've got my facts straight, in the original workshop there was another teacher role besides the gym teacher, as well the role of the principal. Maybe she's playing one of those roles? I just cannot for the life of me see Sutton Foster playing a 17 year old high school girl.

I'm sure Foster, if she has indeed been cast, would be playing Miss Gardner.

Foster is playing Carrie, not Miss Gardner.
Keep in mind that this is a reading. The actors involved don't have to be age appropriate for their roles because the whole point is simply to hear the material read and sung.
Lest we forget that Annie Golden played Carrie in the very first reading the last time around. This is no way indicative of how casting would go in a full fledged production.

Yes, Marin Mazzie is Margaret and Sutton Foster is Miss Gardner (not Carrie).
I know many people working on this project. Foster is not Carrie.
