Well, California atleast, right?
Yeah, this is not announced for Broadway yet.
I'm sure if it's successful in CA it will certainly come to Broadway, but as of now, she's originating a role in CA, not Broadway.
Well, on the show's page on CTG's website it calls LEAP OF FAITH "the Broadway-bound musical". I don't know if that was the same case for MINKSY'S which hasn't said a word on whether or not it will even show up in New York.
I read it wrong, I thought it was on Bway...bummer.
Apparently Minsky's is no more?
and can't wait for Leap of Faith - great cast.
someone just posted that Minsky's still has its sights on b'way - time will tell.
But: don't MOST shows open with aspirations to be able to bring it to B'way?
(But I'd like this to make it here, I'm very interested.)
Yeah, of course they're going to say that, for appearances. Plans for Broadway are actively in the works, but billing it that way doesn't mean it's definite.
Anyway, I've very much come around to the idea, but she'd better be good.
And the stakes for good performance are high, given that she's playing opposite Esparza.
While I know she is the first the play the role on stage, Is it really orginating a role if the show is just a movie put on stage? I have never seen the movie but I'm assuming her character was already done by an actress in the movie. I guess I always think of orginating a role is when no one else did the role before such as a role in Urinetown, Avenue Q etc
If the character has not been seen on Broadway before, it's considered originating the role.

wiggum2, originating a role is being the first to play the role in an adaptation. Creating a role is being the first to play the role in an original show.
"And the stakes for good performance are high, given that she's playing opposite Esparza."
I don't understand the intended point. I don't know why the presence of Esparza would have any impact at all on the importance of Shields' performance.

Me either. If anything the show will be relying on Shields' presence for ticket sales, etc.
I think she just meant that if you're performing opposite Raul, the bar is set pretty high.

Oh, please.
You asked for clarification; no one said you had to agree.
"You asked for clarification; no one said you had to agree."
Fair enough. I guess I have to allow that every thread about this production is going to devolve in Esparza fanboy/fangirl adoration.
Disclaimer: I like Esparza, and I enjoyed his performances in Company and Rocky Horror. I wish him and this production well. I just find it frustrating that certain performers have their superfans, who elevate them to a pedestal above reality, and tend to dominate threads with their adoration.
Well, I wasn't aware that merely commenting on (personal assessment of) his talent was now being counted as "devolving" into unacceptable levels of fangirling.
You said you didn't understand the point. Point being that, as a matter of personal opinion, if you pair him up with someone who doesn't match his presence, it's not going to work. (See also: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.)
I don't understand why that warranted such an "I'm rolling my eyes at you" snarky response. I don't think either of us was being overly fangirly, so please don't take your frustration with some unit out on either of us individually. I obviously am a huge fan of his work, but I try to be respectful of people who don't agree with me, and I don't think I did anything wrong here. One idle comment does not turn a thread into a huge gush-fest. And frankly, I haven't seen that happen in years.
(And of course, now the thread is going to derail anyway.)
I've never understood how Brooke Shields continues to get work. Her talent is minimal at best, her singing non-existent. She's about as entertaining as a Slap Chop commercial.
Actually that's an insult to Slap Chop. My bad.
^ how many shows have you seen her in? She got incredible reviews in Wonderful Town, and she was a great Roxie in Chicago.
And given that she is originating this part, I'd think it would be tailored to her abilities.
I'm the first to give Raul Esparza my full support. As I stated in another thread he is a great source of pride for us in the Latino community however I wouldn't go so far as to state that Brooke Shields has to hold her own with him because his presence has set the bar pretty high. Shields. like it or not is a show business VETERAN. Raul Esparza was still in diapers when Shields was making a name for herself and in her defense she has more than proven her worth on a theater stage. I'm sure they will make a terrific team in this show and they will compliment each other well.
I'm not saying she's not talented, or denying any of her experience. Did I not, in this very thread say that I had come around to the idea? I was originally skeptical about her in this particular role, but I like her in general. I've said many times that I think they'll have excellent chemistry, and I've gone from skeptical to hopeful. Big difference. I agree with Ariella: I think Esparza sets a high standard when he's on stage (and I am hopeful that Shields can live up to that), and that's being (wrongly) interpreted as implying that she's not talented, hasn't paid her dues on stage, whatever. A compliment to him is not automatically an insult to her. It's not meant to be. I don't understand why this is such a big deal; I think some of these posts are being read through a pre-determined filter.
