Disclaimer: I have not seen Brooklyn.
After hearing the songs at their web site and seeing the rehearsal at Broadway Beat and reading the Broadway Abridged version, I have a question. Do they just yell EVERY song? I mean, do they all sounds alike of is that just what they have released so far?

Please don't turn this into a cat-fight.
If you're wondering whether all the songs are all-out belt ballads like the ones on the CD...well, I imagine they are. I haven't heard any differently, even from the show's fans.

Posted: 10/5/04 at 3:22pmThere are a few that are tamer. I think they purposely put all of the "belters" on the sampler CD.

I guess "songs where they dont yell" is what I mean.
"Magic Man" is one of them.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION:
Does Cleavant Derricks play BOTH Bustopher Jones and Gus/Growltiger, or is the role split up?
Thanks in advance!

Can we just go back to the plot, such as it is, for a moment? And there are SPOILERS in the questions I pose, so if you care about such things, stop reading now. I saw the show on Saturday, and these are some of the things about which I wonder...
How did two homeless street people with nothing better than garbage bags to wear as clothing manage to arrange to hold their battle for the hearts and minds (of whom???) in Madison Square Garden? Who arranged it? Who fronted the money? Who were the people who were going to pay to see the these two battle it out (for what, again?) and who was giving massive amounts of money to the winner, and why? And finally, on what planet is a little white girl's search for the unknown father going to become a cause celebré? She was unique because why?
And in my opinion there is a whole lot of high belting, much of it shrill. Ms. Espinosa has a beautiful voice when she's not pushing the envelope.

iflit,
I had the same questions about the final scene. If I remember, the winner of the contest would get $$ and a recording contract, and the loser would be basically kicked out of the business. Since when would two singers without a recording contract get to compete at MSG? And can't two singers co-exist on the planet?
Did not like this show. Great performers, but ugly set, ugly costumes and really annoying songs.

Why did they produce Brooklyn?
So darlings. Will the new hip clothing become hefty bags?
And what color garbage bags will be hip.
How about purple garbage bags with matching plastic bags.
OH LA LA.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh Phanty how very sweet of you.
Can we do a duet?
How about a threesome, you. Me. Eddie?
Dave might get jealous.

No, no, Paradice is a huge star with a recording contract and a lot of money. Brooklyn is an up and coming star also presumably with a recording contract and a lot of money.
I loathed pretty much every minute of this show. Vile, self-righteous garbage.

what the Brooklyn-ites will tell you, VEHEMENTLY, is that the plot is a story being told by homeless people who take on the roles of the characters... my question is, then, why not just hire homeless actors?
on NY1, this morning, Eden Espinosa said, referring to the songs, "It's not so much in the context of a story" and my immediate question was "then what's the point?" ... this lends much credence to Corine's opinion that this would be a story better told in a concert...

Thank you Joe,
It would work as a concert. In fact it would be terrific.
They need to get rid of that story. I think it could run for years if they just changed the story.
Why. The story is PATHETIC. It is the stars that carry the music.
I really think they should take this advice.
They have time to save this show.

#99re: Brooklyn Is It a Paradise or Paradice?
Posted: 10/6/04 at 9:47amYes, in my opinion - they do have to make sense, otherwise they are pointless.
