I think its actually great PR because after reading that I am even more excited about this movie. At first I was skeptical but im getting more excited. I think that in order for the show to be put to screen properly it should be Rated R

SPOILERS (I guess):
No matter how they handle the actual throat cuttings, the grossest scene (for me) is Toby in the bake house and there is no way to tone down that scene without changing the plot. On the other hand, anyone who has lasted that long and not left shouldn't be offended by that scene. I adore SWEENEY but there is going to be a lot of controversy over the subject matter no matter how it is filmed. People are going to go to this movie for Johnny Depp, and some of them are not going to be happy with the plot, the music or anything else not involving pirates. This is going to be a tough stage to screen transition, no doubt.

OH yeah, because Depp has never been a challenging actor before.
I really hope they don't make Burton watter down anything important...
If WB was looking to make a commercial smash with this film, anyway, they were fooling nobody but themselves.
It is a horror musical! I hope it is a blood bath! It should be what it is.
I don't know if this have been posted yet, so yeah

"OH yeah, because Depp has never been a challenging actor before."
This is also very "What?"
so.....what?
There are all kinds of reasons to give this movie an "R," not just the blood and gore.
You have a public rape in a flashback, plus you have an older man lusting after a 16-year-old girl... the sexual situations alone would land it a solid PG-13 without a drop of blood, and if you add in the "red stuff," you're looking at an R, without a doubt.
It is what it is. The studio needs to make ANOTHER film, if they want one for the "kiddies." This is Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

In last week's Entertainment Weekly, they had their fall movie preview guide, including a page on Sweeney Todd, and in there Tim Burton expressed that the movie was receiving an R rating.
And Chris Columbus said there were no language cuts to get a PG-13 in Rent and then there was the BS that "only one song had been cut from the Dreamgirls score," etc. Pre-release propaganda means nothing.
Well...technically...if you don't count the recitative as a song...?
O:)

True. And Hollywood sure don't.
Sorry, i put the url for the pic in the optional link spot instead of image. See above post.
I've never seen a live production of SWEENEY that was bloody enough. This production in Germany seemed to get it right.
^^^^^^^^
Does it matter that he's not even near the guys throat?
Probably not, Diva. I'm guessing his motion was quick, and from the stage it wouldn't matter as much... but you'd see the blood spewing.
I remember from friends who saw it in previews on Broadway that the blood "spewed out" a lot further. It was very messy on the stage, and even went into the pit, so they decided to tone it down, and re-did the trick blade that he used.
But they were always pushing for more blood, even in the original production.
Anybody here see it in early previews with the "Gallagher concert" style blood bath?
Oh, in addition to the bloodbath, the first few previews were conducted by Sondheim himself. At least the one my friends attended!
Awesome. So this recording of the first Bway preview that I've heard exists is conducted by Sondheim, AND has the Judge's "Johanna", AND Lansbury ****s up the entire first verse of "Worst Pies In London." Fierce.
Wasn't the entire staging of the show re-tooled during previews too? Or something to that effect though possibly not as dramatic?
I was laughing over that comment that this isn't for fifteen year olds! Some might say, it's a great date Movie! It has more style and storytelling then your usual Friday the 13th or Scream 100. They should be grateful to see something with more class.
It is creepy, realistic and revenge! If they tone it down, it will lose it's appeal to the over all public. I expect plenty of fifteen yr olds to be sneaking into this Movie once the buzz gets out. Especially with this great cast of characters.
We get the opportunity too, to own another fine Musical on DVD. I am happy Burton took on the task and is fighting to get out it's ominous mssg. to those who wrong us. Timely as well. Lots of disgruntled people these days, it could do very well indeed.
