Awww. Raúl!
I didn't cry as much as I thought I would during the show. I did a bit when the lights first went down and after the Bobby/Kathy scene in the park, but other than that, I held off until the end. For the most part, I laughed as much as I always did. Maybe more. In the moment, when it was going on, all I could do was be happy. But as soon as Bobby's line, "what do you get?" came around, I couldn't hold it back and cried harder than I ever have in a theater before. I never do that, but I guess it needed to happen.

As sad as today was, I just felt this sense of joy coming from the cast. Even afterwards, they all were in such good spirits and were so gracious and genuinely like, thankful for the experience. But every time a scene passed today, I just kept thinking "wait, it's too soon. I love this part. Oh, It's over. wait" It went by really, really fast.
Here are a few of mine:

The guy sitting next to me was obviously pretty hungry as his stomach made one huge growl for about three minutes during the first act. The people around me thought that it was me because my Mom turned to me, so I cleared that up during the intermission.
Raul didn't even get the chance to finish Being Alive, everybody was on their feet already.
And of course the cell phone... which I guess the person hesitated to pick up because it went on for a while. At least it wasn't during the long silence while Joanne and Bobby were staring at each other.
The house was packed, as was the stage door. The line just for Will Call was well past the parking garage next to the theatre... and the line for people with tickets in hand was even longer. The usual "rush" tickets sold at full price.
Did anyone else here notice that Asian girl at the stage door (I hope that isn't anyone here). She was on top of the people as they came out of the stage door.. she even followed that girl with the baby because she thought she was in the show. And then she got her spot back in the front. But bravo to everyone at the stage door, there was a lot of Playbill/Program passing and everyone seemed to get their stuff back.
The was my first and only time seeing the show, and I wish I had seen it more. It was an amazing performance and everybody was on top of their songs. Marta was brilliant with "Another Hundred People."
It was a shame when all the actors were coming out of the stage door with all their stuff (instruments and such). They had to pack up and get out to a mob of people. We had to separate many times for people going back and forth.

I know. I am kicking myself for not being able to see this show earlier in the run. It's the kind of thing you take for granted - you figure you will always have time, but it's just not the case.
I was glad that Raul acknowledged the kind of theatrical history they were making in his speech today, because it's so true. And I actually like the cranky usher now because he was saying today that if all the droves of people who had shown up in the last 2 weeks were there in the winter, they wouldn't be closing. Then he said that an audience member told him that the story was dated, and he said, "oh right, lyrics like 'another hundred people just got off of the train are dated...'"

Yeah, wtf? Was she the one who was like, INSIDE the stage door? That was a little insane, but she wasn't the only one today! Who did she follow with the baby, not Heather Laws, right?

Aw, I was crying looking at those pictures.
Forgive me if this is stupid, but the PBS DVDs will eventually be sold on Amazon, right?
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

In her defense, we kept getting pushed forward.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:08amHah, yea we were... the entire area was mobbed with people. I had a clear view of her though, until my Mom kept letting people get in front of us because she felt bad.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:09amI was going to stage door today but when I got out of the theater and saw the throngs of people, plus trying to get over there and being pushed into the street...I decided to start back to catch my train(plus I could have only stayed for like 15 minutes)...I am lucky to have gone to see it twice before and gotten my pictures taken and have gotten my playbill signed by the whole cast..

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:11amI had my half-signed playbill with me, and Matt went to sign it and was like "how did you already get Raul's signature?" hehe

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:11amI'm a little on the short side, so people kept reaching over my head. This one guy actually had his program over my face, so I could've been a writing table. I was standing there going "I promise I'll move... I really will!," and Raul was laughing at me.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:14amOh wait, my quote was misinterpreted. She wasn't literally on top of them (well she was, but that wasn't how I meant it... the door actually kept hitting the guy that was standing there telling people they had to BUZZ IN before trying to open the door), I meant she was like "You were Joanne! You were April! You were an understudy who didn't perform!"

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:14amI'm really small, so I didn't even try to brave that crowd. I was able to say goodbye and thank-you to Raul when the mob thinned a little bit, but didn't even try to get to the rest of the cast. I'd have liked to thank them one last time, but they were just way too surrounded.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:16amyeah that was insane. I don't think they were expecting that many people - I would think they'd have some sort of barricade to at least keep people a foot or so away from the SD entrance!

Yup,a nd when they were talking about Barbara's death stare, they said it to Leenya. Then they realized they had the wrong person, and tried to drag me into it. Leenya was just like "No... I'm Jenny." And I told her I knew that, but I had no clue what they were talking about so I told her I was confused and changed the subject.

Right, that was when there were about three people signing and Playbills were moving around like crazy. Barbara Walsh double signed for someone and they were complaining behind me.
But it wasn't as bad as the guy who started moaning when Raúl walked out. It was the same guy who was yelling at someone next to him who went to the final performance of Pirate Queen and then told everyone to stare at him.

The crowd was insanity! I'm not a huge fan of the barricades, but they really needed them.
I talked to Jane (a standby) for a second when she came out, and told her I saw her go on as Amy. She asked when I saw her do it, and I told her it was in March. She goes, "Oh that was March 13 because that's the only time I went on for Amy in March. I went on during previews, though." And like spewed all that out. She was adorable.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:25amWhen Amy got to me and I asked her for her autograph she was like " I saw you on the subway platform last night. You had Company programs. You probably didn't recognize me without the makeup." I definitely saw her and didn't know whether or not to go up to her so I didn't but I knew it was her. She was also really sweet.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:25amyeah I think barricades were needed tonight...also before we entered the theater tonight there was a lot of confusion and it was a mad house...these little old ladies kept trying to cut in front of me in line...when there was like 60 people behind me...it was crazy

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:28amYeah, what was the deal not letting people in until....it had to start around quarter to 3, according to my watch anyway? It was a tremendous line for ticket holders and I was back a ways, but could still see the door ok. I got inside at 5 mins to 3 and over half the line had to be behind me.

It was like that on Saturday too. The line seriously went down 90% of the block and it started 15-20 minutes late.
