"Raul said Sondheim was in Australia to see a production of Company, but had been there on Wednesday."
I saw Sondheim Wednesday night, exiting the stagedoor. He just all of a sudden walked out, kind of half smiled (in that Sondheim way that he never really smiles), and walked away. It was amazing to have been within two feet of him. I went totally fangirl right afterwards, but he walked away before I could say anything.
I'm cheesed my trip to NYC couldn't have been extended to this weekend, but I'm grateful for being able to student rush it Wednesday (especially considering how amazing the seats were- yow!) when so many people I know who wanted to see it never got to at all. I'm just happy the DVD will be out at some point, because it really was such an incredible and moving experience, one I really will remember all my life.
"Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"
I am so grateful that I got to be in the audience today. It was truly an exceptional experience. The best thing was how into it the audience was. After every scene or every song, there was enthusiastic cheering. I've never seen anything like it. Kelly and Raul's scene hit me the hardest. They were both so obviously holding back tears when she said, "I think there's a time to come to New York, and a time to leave." Heartbreaking. Ladies Who Lunch was fiercer than I've ever seen it before. And massive props to Barbara for staring down the cell phone person. That was ridiculous. The audience loved every line- great reactions to everything. When Raul stopped playing in the middle of the song, I gasped. It was heartwrenching. By the end of Being Alive, I was gone. And when he blew out the candles for the final time. Also, when they were all standing there about to say "Happy Birthday Robert" for the last time, they all face offstage and they all looked so sad. And then he blew out the candles. Wow. I have several pictures from curtain call that I will gladly post if anyone would like to see them. And I encourage others to please do the same.
It was a really amazing night to be in the audience and was an experience I will never forget. Thank you to everyone involved in Company for this truly amazing show.

I knew what Company was about and what the main gist of it was, but only today did I really listen to the complete revival recording, and it is such a brilliant show. I really wish this had lasted longer than it did. With this and another brilliant show closing, I'm really starting to see the evils of big business in Broadway. But anyway, here's to the Great Performance airings, the DVD, the hope of a tour, and the ladies who lunch.
As everyone has said, the performance was incredible. I'd never realize how seat location could change your perception of a show SO much, but today I loved it the most of the times I've seen it, and I was in the last row of the mezz. It was a beautiful experience, and one in which I fully and truly realized the genius of the entire piece as a whole, not just separate and individual parts.
The standing ovation after Being Alive was probably around a minute or 90 seconds or so. Definitely NOT five minutes. I thought it was really great that the entire audience stood for the whole cast, and not just Raul.
"Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. Want something. Want something."
Kelly and Raul's scene hit me the hardest. They were both so obviously holding back tears when she said, "I think there's a time to come to New York, and a time to leave." Heartbreaking.
Agreed. Seems like they didn't want to let go of each other's hand when she was walking off to the side.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

Kathy and Bobby's scene is one of my absolute favorites in the show. Today was no exception. That pause before Raul said "...I did" (meaning he had wanted to marry her) was heartwrenching indeed.
"Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. Want something. Want something."
These are fairly crappy quality, but better than nothing.
Empty stage before the show:

Love this one of the girls:

It looks like everyone covered the show today pretty well already.
It was truly an amazing experience, and I'm so glad I was able to be there. This entire show and cast was just SO extraoridinary; I'm really sad to see it go, but I have all the faith in the world that each and every person in the cast is going to go on to wonderful things in the future (and at least we'll have the PBS recording)!
I don't think the fact that it's gone is going to really hit me until I walk by the theatre tomorrow and see the "Company played it's last performance on July 1, 2007" notes on the doors.
mine are pretty much the same as what everyone else has. These all came out so great. Ashley- I have no idea what I was laughing at while Kelly was signing my program. She said something funny!
The morning star always gets wonderful bright the minute before it has to go --doesn't it?
